I have been wanting a Wrangler forever. I found one for sale a few hours away. It is a 2002 Wrangler X manual 6cyl with 44k miles. Asking price is 12,000 . Is this a good deal ? Not sure what to look for . I can provide pictures from the listing.

Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Could be a good deal. Could be a horrible deal. We will need to see pics to give you opinions. Frame condition will be very important. If the frame is rusted to hell, it doesn't matter how nice the rest of the jeep is.

Post up some pics, and maybe we can give you some guidance.

Here are the pics.

That frame has had some rust. It may have been repaired well, or it may have just been wire-wheeled and spray painted, I can't tell from the pics.

I'd inspect the frame closely before making an offer. If it is in really nice shape, and the frame rust has been mitigated properly, it may be worth 12 in your local market. I personally wouldn't pay over 10 for it (if everything checked out well), but NM and NJ are different markets.

Actually, on a second look, that frame has been eaten pretty decently near the skid. I'd probably only buy it if I could get it for a song. Like 5-6k. But we out here in the dry desert climate are more picky than some members in the northeast. People near you may say that the frame isn't bad at all.🤷‍♂️

Caveat Emptor.

Mismatched tires is sort of a red flag to me too. That the owner or flipper or car lot was trying to do everything as cheaply as possible to the extreme.

I was so focused on the pitting, I missed that completely! 🤦‍♂️ Now that you pointed it out, I have no idea HOW I MISSED THAT!🤣

Its weird because the body looks really nice - even the parts that rot out at the body mounts. Even most of the undercarriage looks pretty good and nothing out of place as for a stock vehicle.

Right? That's definately one of those Jeeps that would make me stop, based on it's appearance from 50 feet away. But then you start looking, and realise you're better off walking!

It sounds like 3 big red flags to me . Man you guys are good .

Your area is going to be a tough one. I've seen so many jeeps from the NY/NJ area that either get bought cheap then patched up and re-sold, or get sold, as-is, to people who don't know they bought a ticking time bomb. Just take your time and continue to draw from the expertise here. FWIW, when you do find a rust-free version, it will likely be at a premium.

When I lived in VT and CT, everyone switched their nice wheels over to crap wheels when winter hit. I just washed the salt off daily on mine. (y)
