I’m having real trouble backing off the star wheel while trying to remove drums . Any advice

Does the drum turn? If so, you shouldn't need to back the shoes off to remove the drum. Just use a big hammer or a drum puller.

Edit: And of course, make sure the e-brake is off ;)

Are you sure you are turning the slack adjusters the correct direction?
But they might be seized up too.

And you are pushing in on the self-adjusting pawl, right? (Which would prevent it from retracting)

I have the left drum off. The right drum turns and comes off about a quarter inch then stops. Starwheel doesn’t move in either direction. Shot another crapload of penetrant in there and will try again in AM.

Pawls out of the way. I can adjust to spread shoes. I can’t get it to come back. Biggest hammer has been deployed….no luck

Once you've gotten the drum out the hammer should go away. Are you using a flathead on the star adjuster from the rear side of the drum cover? Drum brakes is one of those things where pictures help a lot and also new hardware. When you get the star adjuster out use antiseize on the threads.

One of the members of the forum made this video it is very helpful

I am using a flat head. I believe I have turned the adjust back as far as it goes. I can turn it to the shoe speed until the drum locks up, thenn I reverse until it won’t move anymore a drum still won’t come off. I have had jeep for five years and 40K miles and never looked at rear brakes.

If you have the drum out a bit, I would try tapping it front-to-back and back-to-front. Trying to tap the brake pads back in a bit.

I’m getting there!

Adjuster wheel was retracted all the way. One big ring of corrosion on the drum…

Next question: what am I looking at in the next photo of fuel tank filler?
