Moved to California, do I really need to replace my catalytic converter?

Having issues passing visual smog in CA due to Jeep having aftermarket 49 state cats. Online I have found info that says newly purchased out of state vehicles need C.A.R.B. compliant components, but I am not finding anything about already owned out of state vehicles. Seems odd I would need to replace the cats which meet all MA emission standards and testing just to bring it over the CA state line. Maybe this is just the way it works in CA, but figured I would see if anyone else has experience with this.

You may also be able to take it to a referee if the smog station won’t pass it. The referee can make the determination.

Is there more to this story? Reason I ask is I just had a smog test done and passed easily. I know for a fact there are no numbers on the OE cat where the belly skid is, nor was I even questioned about it.

My LJ came from out of state and has a cat back exhaust. Sure enough, it didn't pass smog when they changed the laws a couple years ago. Went to a close by place to find out how much to make it pass: $2200.

Took it to a reputable muffler shop and was able to get it done for $450.

You would probably spend the 2200 at the cheaper place nowadays. I used to buy that same system from the dealer for 800. No way that it will be had in State for less than double that now.

Not much more to the story other than I went to the closest shop to me that was open on a Saturday. I still have the MA plates on the jeep until I can pass smog. He was looking them over when I pulled in so not sure if this prompted him to take a closer look at things, or if I just picked a more stringent shop than others.

It's surprising to read that anyone has willingly moved to California since Newsome became Governor. After spending nearly my entire life in California less my time in the military I escaped it in May. I miss only the state's beauty and the friends I had there but nothing else. There's a mass exodus from the state, it's even hard to get a moving van to move your stuff out, they're booked up.

I live in the seventh largest city in the USA. Here is my inspection process:
Turn on lights. High beams. Left signal. Right signal. Brakes. Tap horn. How many miles? That'll be $7.
Have a nice day.

I spent almost two years in Kali, in the USN. I was at the Haight - Ashbury intersection in 1969. Thousands of others were there, too. Nobody was peeing, pooping, or begging. There is not enough money to get me to go back there.

This CARB certified catalytic converter requirement is such a racket.
An identical Fed cat can be 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of a Cal cat....

They aren't identical. The federal Cadillactic converters aren't non-GMO, vegan, gluten -free and carbon-neutral certified. Those certification processes cost a lot of monies.

I thought it was because they didn’t ship with the “known to cause cancer” sticker?

Also so you know if you get a used one don't advertise it, keep to yourself.
Under Commifornia law: "no used converter can be legally advertised for sale, sold, or installed in California"

Cat thievery is so common place in SoCal, I wouldn't touch a used unit (and capitalize on someone else's victimization) without knowing for certain it wasn't stolen. Yeah, CA politics suck .. course it will be 80 degrees and I'm gonna go ride my motorcycle today .. looking at the news, looks like that won't be happening in a large swath of the Country .. so there is that.

Just to add my Kali comments, I was stationed in San Diego from '87 -'90 . . . and it was amazing. Perfect weather, the beach, beautiful women . . . Car plates at the time for active duty were about $25 a year. When I got discharged, I moved across country for a job and was missing the weather, the beach and the scenery (ALL of it ;-). But a few months later I got a notice from Kali DMV that my plate renewal was coming up, and that since I was no longer active duty (somehow they knew that in 1990 well before mass connectivity) my plate fee was somewhere in the $800 range IN 1990!!!! I literally laughed out loud. I've been back a few times to visit firends, but I would NEVER move there again . . . neither the beach nor the weather can cancel the woke politicians and large percentage of bat$hit crazy residents.

Why did they fail it for cat back?was the cat still stock?

Damn! Those Californians will steal anything and try to make it their own. ;)
WTF cat (2017_11_20 00_38_12 UTC).jpg

The parts that made it fail were not stock, didn't have the right numbers stamped on them.

So they were the cats? I think anything beyond the cat doesn’t matter but they laws can be confusing and the inspectors would rather fail a vehicle rather than risk fines or jail.
