Going to see a TJ for first Jeep

This looks like a restoration project to me. Plan on a lot of time to get it driving right (tho “right” depends on your tolerance of poor behavior).

It could be a good deal, if it’s truly rust free. From the pics, that looks to be stretching the truth a bit.

The parts used to modify it are of questionable quality, and I don’t know what 300 dollar “kit” you’re talking about to fix the A/C, but I would make the PO stop working on it immediately

I would take one good ride. Turning hard. Braking hard, and seeing if it pulls too much. Like somebody said we already have one so it's easy to say no, but the price is not that bad if you can fix things. You better open the radiator cap up after all the rust lately inside the cooling system. I bet its rust brown , and if it is I would consider walking. There is no excuse if you have owned a Jeep for a while and you cant even flush the system.

It has a transfer case skid plate spacer. That isn’t factory and is usually added to help with possible vibrations after lifting.
It’s a cheap solution to a problem but not “wrong” unless you are trying to get belly clearance for off-road.

To be honest, I’m not sure. I don’t see myself rock crawling, but I’d like to tow behind the RV and cross some Colorado passes on vacations.

You can take a huge number of the Colorado 4WD trails and passes with a stock, or near-stock Wrangler. 31 inch tires and very few other mods will get you there.

That seller is probably counting on his mods to increase the value, but shoddy mods actually reduce it. You don't want to pay for a bunch of stuff you'll have to pull off and replace with higher quality stuff.

I appreciate you looking. That one is 540 miles from me. 8 hr drive. Yikes. Hard for me to do.

I understand that's a long way to go. I looked for my Wrangler for several years in a very busy market (Denver) and could never get there before someone else bought them. Then I found one over 300 miles away, and it was just far enough that the buyers weren't flocking there. Sometimes it's worth it to go the extra mile — or several hundred in this case. :)

Don't get discouraged. Check this one out, but be ready to walk away and watch for the next one.

Definitely good advice. I am prepared to do that.

On the linked one near Atlanta, I’d really have to fly there, then decide to buy or not and drive or fly home. A bit of risk in additional costs.

I haven’t driven or seen it yet in person. I’m supposed to go see it this weekend. I’ll check out that thread.

If you're sure you can walk away, then definitely go test drive it.
The more different ones you look at, the more you'll know which one is a better deal.

Side note; I drove 6 hours (with a trailer) to go 'look' at mine.
Would have been really tough to walk away. :)

To the OP we are buying 20 yr old vehicles don't just jump on that one. Trust me hang out here learn and wait for a good rust free unmolested Jeep. I made the mistake when I didn't know what to look for and lots of $$$ later about got it right.
Good Luck on your search and welcome to the Only real TJ forum.

Seller was Asking $7500. We negotiated from there. I apologize that I am hesitant to disclose the price. Being new to the forum... I've had things scooped out from under me before on other forums, not Jeep of course. Please forgive me.

I don’t think you have to worry about anybody on here buying that out from under you- we’ll give him a fair price to keep it though. Tongue in cheek- we are trying to watch out for you man.

Your handshake deal gives us the impression you have near committed.

All I can tell you really at a quick glance is it will seem endless as far as what it takes to get that jeep enjoyable.

$6500 may be the price, but the cost is going to be about 10-13,000.00 to make it great once your done- unless you end up like one guy- did all that and then needed a frame.

These lists look something like tires, u joints, more axle u joints, unit bearings, oh wow they reused the clutch, brakes, sway bar links, shocks, front end work, adjustable track bars, control arms, radiator, heater core, sensors, more sensors, fluids, new exhaust, steering gearbox, and trip after trip to the parts store.

That jeep has been beat on, looks kid owned and has a lot of miles, and likely was so poorly maintained or abused they killed an engine that is near impossible to kill.

The biggest mistake I made when I got into these things was not knowing how to evaluate one. The next thing that happens is you get on here and we can look at it by pictures and tell you tons of things that are hard to believe- And we are right about 99% of the time.

Right out of the gate if it’s set up wrong you’re going to have to fix everything just to enjoy the jeep- That means forced spending.

Now all this has a negative tone but realistically it may be exactly what you want and if it has no rust and you can get into a cheap enough and everything else checks out OK great, But based on what I see It will take thousands of dollars in parts to get that jeep anywhere back to where it needs to be.

If you could find a lower mileage stock wrangler and start from there you’ll have a clean slate to work from and most likely not have nearly as much to do, Until you want to.

You might spend less if you pay more.

I've seen enough just from the pictures. I wouldn't waste my time to even look at it. I've driven for hours to look at Jeeps that looked great in pictures, only to leave without even getting out of my car. Pisses my wife off. She would say, aren't you even going to get out and talk to the guy. I would tell her, no need to waste either of our time. It's a POS from 30' away.

Not once have i crossed Alabama without getting into some retarded shit, half of my life issues are because of dealing with consequences from crossing that fucking state line. East bound, north bound, south bound, all equally retarded bound.
Nothing personal to guys on here, but if that state sunk into its own stinky sewage of Mobile, i would not give 2 shits.

I was about to take my shit talk back, because i did travel up north once without issues, but then i remembered that i purposefully drove around towards east to cut through Georgia.
