Upgrading my TJ to be more off-road capable

You forgot that a 35 on 17’s weighs more than a 35 on 15’s.

Of course, you're right, though I'm not sure what measurable difference it will make having 5lbs/corner more of unsprung weight. Aesthetics outweigh the weight penalty in my opinion. Of course, I'm running 35's on a 15" rim, but I do not prefer the look. One more thing to change. 🤣

Braking and acceleration on an already anemic power plant.

My Trailready beadlocks are 15 x 9 @ ~31lbs and my 17’s are 17 x 8.5 @ ~35 lbs.

Nice Flex.

Oh. Yeah, when you said on I thought you were giving the mounted weights. I was thinking that the tires must be pretty light, with a 35# wheel!

Yeah after rereading "on" wasn't the word I should have used. "For" would have been better.

Work starts up for me again at the end of this month. After I make a bit more money, I think I’ll be ready to get tires and maybe wheels.

I’ve pretty much settled on Falken wildpeak at3w’s. Any objections? I’m definitely going with 31s whether that be 31x10.5r15 or 255/70r17.

Per my amazing math skills, going with the 15” wheels, I’ll be saving about $150. However, I will need to get different wheels as I currently have 17” jk takeoffs. I see only benefits in going with 15s, so I think this is what I’ll plan on doing.

Is it fine to just get some cheap takeoffs from any other jeep model that are 15”? Are there any I should stay away from? It seems I can get a set of 5 for around $100-$300 and I think that’s worth getting different wheels. Once again, thanks for everyone’s help!

I've never had any, but lots of people recommended them to me when I was looking for tires recently. They were in my top 3.

If they're the same bolt pattern (5x4 1/2), they will bolt up. Wrangler or Cherokee should be no problem. If they are aftermarket wheels, just remember that less backspacing = pushing the wheel/tires out. Either way, when looking at used wheels you need to have some straightedge to put to them, and It would be best to have them without tires on them so you can lay them flat on concrete or a workbench and eyeball how true they are.

Chris has this write up on what wheels came on our TJ's. A 31x10.50R15 tyre will fit fine on these wheels for your build.

You won't be disappointed. Depending on how much longer you're sticking with 33s, I'd recommend re-gearing now. I wish I had done it sooner. I wheeled for alot of years on 33s with stock gears, not knowing what I was missing out on.

I still haven’t decided if I want to go with 35s one day so I don’t want to have to do it twice

I have 32” Falcon at3w on my wifes rig, they are a great all around capable tire that still drives nice on the road. Personally I would go more aggressive for a trail rig but if you daily your TJ they’re a great choice

Good to hear! I daily mine. Will probably only get off-road once a month. Otherwise, I’d go with MT’s of some sort
