My 2004 wrangler sport front passenger seat belt recently started to fail to retract. The driver's side has been that way for a while. Apparently, the plastic spools inside the recoil assembly's that the webbings roll up on are crumbling. My plan was to replace both sides. When I did an internet search, I found a few outer oem assemblies that turned up at $500-600 per side. Apparently, Jeep decided to discontinue them. I really didn't want to have to go with aftermarket belts assemblies. Anyone have any luck with later model belts if you changed out both inside and outsides? Thanks

I guess that would be an option, I figured that used ones would be in about the same condition as what I have now. If I was able to get a new set and they lasted 20 years like the originals did, they would last me the rest of my life. I keep the wrangler inside a garage so I was surprised that the plastic spools give it up like they did.

https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/ Is what I had when this happened. I walked away and the car seats didn’t move.

I would be very wary of used seatbelts, unless they are somehow "certified" to never have been involved in a collision. It seems to me to be a reasonable assumption that a certain percent of used seatbelts were pulled from wrecked vehicles . If seatbelts are ever in a serious accident they are supposed to be "once n done" and replaced, never to be used again. They permanently stretch to absorb the energy of a human body in a serious accident, and would never offer the same protection again.

They really are a great US based shop. When I replaced the jeep above I placed another order. For those of us with kids in car seats, they will custom add the KISSE retractor on the rear belts which gives you the locking ratchet mechanism not found on the OEM.

Wow their pricing is downright reasonable! I'm going to bookmark that site for future use.

They've actually shot up recently. In 2020 I paid $159 for a pair of fronts, and then last month I paid $219 for the same thing. Regardless, I have their stuff on 2 different TJ's, and my only complaint is that they tend to lock up as you pull them out. You get used to the speed you need to pull them out at, but they're not nearly as forgiving as the OEM belts.

They sell custom colors if you're into that, and you can get free swatches from Seat Belt Planet (I believe).
