If I was interested in swapping my 5 speed in my 2002 TJ the obvious best choice is another 2002 but I was wondering if there were other years that would work OK and if there were years to avoid because of the extra work involved.

Are there other vehicles that would make a good choice?

The 97-02 32RH is the same beast. The only difference between the years would be the PCM that also needs to be programmed for the 32RH to control its lockup torque converter.

Good to know, so I would have to have a pcm out of a 2002 automatic TJ?

One from a 2001 would probably work too, it just has to match your coil rail ignition that came along sometime in 2001. If you can't find a used one Mark at @Wranglerfix would have what you need.

Thanks for the help, I'm kicking around the idea of buying a salvage TJ at auction. That way I should have all the parts needed for the swap and maybe sell other parts to offset the cost. It would be great if I could get one with a hardtop/auto/AC

Yes it is, it's tucked into the wiring harness above the transmission.

I would have lost that bet. Also, I wish I had known that, I suppose I could've scavenged that connector off any M/T TJ rather than hacking into the spare harness I had.

I can program your pcm for manual software same day turnaround if you send it into us.

So, i know this thread is from a while ago. But Im working on what i believe is a 2000 tj and it does not have the factory pcm. The cluster isnt working, the heater a/c controls, transmission shifts really hard. Are these all things that could lead back to an improperly programmed aftermarket pcm? My scanner wont pull up the auto id for the vehicle which leads me to believe pcm issues. Am i reading this correctly, someone on here can program this pcm?

@Mikeofall Have you seen the cluster work with the pcm installed? Have you tried performing a gauge test on the Jeep? What is the part number on the pcm?

Thanks,

Mark

I have not seen the cluster work at all. I just acquired this jeep. gauge test? I dont have the part number on me. Ill have to look when i go to my shop. The guy i bought it from said he bought it from Oreillys and had a dealer install it. However, pretty sure he is full of crap. but i can tell it is a "different" pcm than stock.

The PCM isn’t going to affect shift quality on a 2000, the computer doesn’t control the trans expect for the torque converter lockup. You can verify it’s not the tcc by just unplugging it at the back of the transmission. Won’t cause you any harm, might affect your mileage ever so slightly.

Here is a link to the gauge test. Please let me know when you get the part number.

I don’t see any part number on this pcm. Looks like original tag has been scraped off and some numbers have been scratched into it. Has a reman tag on it. Saying do not remove. But other than that. Nothing visible.

This is all ive got to work with.

The 1658V engraved on the ecm is a Cardone number that comes back to a 2000 automatic federal emissions Wrangler.
