2005 LJ: No start, no crank, and no gauges

Hi all, I have searched the forum as much as I possibly can, and still haven't been able to solve my problem. I have had an intermittent no crank/start/gauges problem for 6 months. The jeep would be fine for 2 days, sometimes 2 weeks, and even up to a month, and then it would give me the no crank, start etc... I could swap the relays around wiggle the harness remove fuses etc along with a couple of hundred key cycles and it would start and run again fine. I haven't been able to get it to start for two weeks now....ugh!

I have tested and charged the battery numerous times, and the starter. They check out ok. I do not get voltage at the solenoid from the ignition with the key in the start position. I can crank the engine by crossing the posts on the starter, it doesn't start. I can crank the engine by jumpering 12 volts to the 30 terminal on the PDP for the starter relay. (I get 12 volts on the 86 or 87 terminal when the ignition is in the start position.) It still will not start. I have taken apart the ignition, and there is nothing wrong with the actuator pin or any of the parts around or in it. I have 12 volts on the pk/or wire on pinout 30 on PCM module 1 connector with the ignition in the start position.

I have removed all of the grounds, sanded the connector eye, and the surfaces they touch...engine block, firewall, hood, etc... I also have continuity from the battery ground clamp to everything...block firewall, hood, starter, alternator etc...

I cannot get any codes, the scanner just keeps telling me to turn on the ignition to establish communication.....grrrrrr!

The ammeter always blips a little and shows about 9 volts if anything at all, and the fuel gauge shows empty with the low fuel light when it won't start. I'm pretty sure the PCM is just simply not turning on.

I have also gone through every pin on all 4 PCM modules and noted voltage if any, in both the run and start positions. The problem is I'm not sure what should have power, and what shouldn't.

I have removed all of the tapes and loom on the PCM plugs back to the center of the firewall to inspect the splices, so far everything looks good.

Is my PCM junk? Should I just light the thing on fire and watch it burn!? I'm at my wit's end, any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,
Jake

Have you tried sending your PCM to one of those repair places like FS1 to have them test it for you? Apparently they can tell you pretty easily if it's bad or not.

Can you parallel a wire from ignition to starter relay and get it to crank? When you were able to jump starter and crank did you have fuel and spark?
I probably could, but I think it would be the same as the jumper from the battery to the 30 pin on the PDP to make it crank. I don't think I am getting spark or fuel, I don't hear the fuel pump turn on...i think the PCM is not "turning on".

Any possibility of a bad ground wire?

About 5 months ago I went to start my LJ and when I turned the key the typical lights went on but no crank. I took the key out and tried again but no lights or crank or any power. I checked all fuses but they were all good.

Since I was at a parking lot I called Triple A to come help out. The triple A guy checked everything and confirmed the battery was good, no blown fuses or anything obvious like that.

When the guy closed the fuse box located in the engine bay, he kind of closed it hard to snap back into place, then my engine bay light turned on, and then the Jeep started right up.

It turned out to be a bad ground as the ground wire going to the fuse box was not perfectly attached. Possibly play around with that wiring to see if that is the culprit.

No, I have not, do you think that is where I am at? I seem to be out of options.

My engine bay light is on, but i was thinking the same thing....bad ground. I removed and sanded all the big ones...passenger side of the engine block, back of the engine on top, and the hood ground...are there more that i should check??

This guy replaced his cables with a new set from Custom Battery Cables, and he does an in-depth install. This video traces the wiring and would give you the best visual of where to look, and how to follow the wires. I feel your pain!

Wack the starter with a rubber mallet and see if it starts. That could indicate you need a new starter. Mine was intermittent as well at first.

the starter always cranks when I cross the posts, or jumper the relay from the battery. I'm pretty sure it's not the starter.

I know it's been about a year but I just ran across these postings about your problem which I now share. Did you find the problem and what was the fix? I have done all you talked about including a new PCM with zero results. Kevin in Kissimmee FL [email protected]

What what the fault? My 05 TJ is doing the same thing, no crank, no gouges but fan, radio and accessories work.

Like others I'm here a couple years late wondering what happened. Same problem. Tumblers, actuator, and ignition switch are all totally good. Checked fuses, safety switches, battery and starter. What solved the problem? Is my PCM trashed?
