Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

The splash tray was to help keep the hot oil off the bottom of the intake. But it doesn't fit with this manifold. It was made for the kegger intake.

I'm a non-Apple person and Ryan you know that. I've never had a problem up until this last update on my Samsung galaxy phone.

I pulled that splash tray out of my 403 olds too, when I rebuilt the top end. You should have seen the oil briquettes that came outta the valley. I did an exhaust cross over block off to keep the manifold from heating up and cooling my oil

For anyone who's interested the intake manifold gaskets I used this time were the Edelbrock gaskets 7277

New idler pulley and new tensioner pulley to try and stop the chirping I was getting.

Got a new belt but it's too short. I've got to do some more checking to see if the Flowcooler water pump using a larger pulley?

I cut two of the o-rings so had to pull the fuel rail and try again. Lubed the holes up with petroleum jelly this time.

And lubed up the o-rings also. The install instructions from F&B say to use oil but it just wasn't working.

Got the fuel rail reinstalled and no leaks. I'll get the radiator installing in the morning and "HOPEFULLY" will fire it off sometime tomorrow afternoon and verify that I don't have any intake leaks anymore.

BAD NEWS.......
I've done something internal in the engine & will have to pull the heads at least & might have to pull the engine back out. I'm getting coolant into the driver's side cylinders once the engine has warmed up. Hopefully it's just a blown head gasket but I'm not holding out for that. Going to take a day off from FUCKING with the Jeep so I don't do something stupid since I'm not in the best of moods right now.

If it is something internally more than a blown head gasket I'm not sure what my course of action will be.

Bummer, sorry about that. Hopefully it is an easy fix!

I'm hoping so. First thought is blown head gaskets or cracked head.

The good news is it was running.

Yes the fact it was running is the good thing.

No odd noises?

None

Intake sealed?

I was still getting warmer than should be exhaust but I don't know if it has to do with the tune or the intake not sealing again.

Hopefully it is a simple fix.

Fingers crossed it is.

Remember we will always welcome you back into the 4 popper club.

That would be a LOT of work to return it to a 4 popper.

As COOL as that intake is I am to the point where I really think I should just get the Hughes Air Gap and a Holley throttle body for it.

I really thought I had the things sealed good this time. I need to call F&B and talk to them about the intake and see if they have any suggestions or thoughts. I wouldn't feel right trying to sell it to someone else with all the issues I've had with it not sealing up.

I'll post pictures in a few but right now I have the issue resolved.

The drivers side head gasket failed due to an assembly issue as far as I can tell. Right now the passenger side head is stuck on the block so I haven't removed it yet.
The drivers side as soon as I loosened the head studs I had coolant leaking out. So I didn't get it torqued properly or something. The head looks fine and so does the block.

Keep at it Finnigan!

:)

(Ryan will get that)

Awesome!

I made rebent up a stock line and got mine driving again. I can't imagine needing more power than what I now have with a stock motor for the things I do... I can not immagine what yours will be like here soon. Maybe one day I will come out and wheel with you and my brother.

He gonna buy a speedboat now?

Had one and while I enjoyed it NOPE.

Yes after all the Bull Shit talking from those who haven't ever driven a Ram or Grand Cherokee with a 5.2 or 5.9 they are a great engine for 2002 & older TJ's. Glad you got yours running and driving today. Did adjusting your TV cable fix your shifting issues? You can comment here or in your thread.

Man it's a shame I have to cover up this awesome looking valvetrain.

Headers removed and ONLY lost one C-clip. And after 15 minutes of searching I still haven't found it.

Drivers sde was the problem and I'm not sure what I did WRONG during assembly but about half the studs came out when I loosened the nuts for the head studs. Will go back and reread the installation instructions before I put it back together.

You can see where the head gasket had failed between #3 & #5 cylinders. Combustion chambers all look good so right now I really think I'd just FUCKED UP on the assembly. I have NO problems owning up to making a mistake.

20230118_161229.jpg

Now my next challenge is that the passenger side head is stuck on the block. Don't know WHY or what it could be but it was time to stop for the day. I'll look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow and hopefully get it off so I can start the reassembly process.

The drivers side cylinders all look good but I'll put a straight edge on the block and heads before I start to reassemble it.

Plan to drain the oil and clean up the engine as I reassemble it. And then refill with some more break in oil.

I had to go back out and LOOK just to make sure I had pulled all the bolts from the passenger head.
There are 9 bolts that hold it on. 5 under the valve cover and 4 on the bottom.

I can tell you IT IS STUCK on there. I guess the good thing is that means I did one side correctly?

One of my goals someday is to swap a 5.2 from a GC into an early TJ and get rid of the death flash. Would love to feel the true power of one under the hood. Being mine is an 05 there’s just too much that won’t play nicely, emissions aside.
