So when i am driving 65+ if i let go of the gas it briefly feels like i am going over those little bumps on the side of the road to wake u up, same if I accelerate only briefly unless i leave my foot on the gas in a sweet spot, feels like it's coming from the center of the jeep or towards rear axle, I've had a leaky yoke seal so I have a feeling the bearing in the axle is shot, questions is if rear axle, differential, bearings and spider gears are shot and basically unusable, can i remove everything in the axle put new bearings and get a locker like the picture and avoid having to rebuild the axle?
I know stupid question, i should know the answer but I've never really messed with a differential before
02 the straight six manual trans
New driveshaft and wheel bearing were just installed.

If your rear axle, carrier and pinion bearings are shot then your basically going to be rebuilding the diff anyhow save the R&P. If the bearings are shotthen the likelyhood of metal fragments damaging the R&P is probably also likely. Do it once, do it right and be dont with it. ALL new bearings, the locker if you really have a Dana 44 or if its a Dana 35 then look at super 35 kit.

your diff is not really the place to start your 1st DIY project. about the only thing that can be replaced without tearing the diff apart is the outer pinion bearing and crush sleeve and outer seal (if present), IIRC.
replacing any other parts inside will involve a rebuild.

what you describe could be a pinion bearing or possibly a u joint, certainly sounds like you need a new seal. careful inspection is what you need to do 1st determine where the problem actually is.

You're not getting that tail bearing out without pulling the carrier. You have to drive the pinion forward to get it to come off (unless it's been spinning on the pinion and loosened up). You also have to drive the race out from the carrier side.

Technically, yes, you can do what you described, however you would be far better off doing a full rebuild. If you're bearings are that clunky, that means your ring and pinion are taking the brunt of the abuse and are more than likely damaged too. In addition, you would need new ring gear bolts.

I would start by seeing if your pinion nut is loose first. That might resolve your issue minus the leaking seal.

Couple of questions....
Was the condition present prior replacing the drive shaft and bearings
What does the fluid look like
How much lift .

It most certainly sounds like a pinion vibe like others have stated.
Post up some pics of the driveshaft and tcase.

noted ...sorry, been a minute since i played this game. bearing was a mistake.
