hoping to get some insight on an issue im having with a 97 TJ i just recently purchased. when i get up to 85km/h my jeep has a pretty noticeable shake. Ive replaced both front wheel bearings assemblies and the shake improved a little. Ive also replaced the steering stabilizer and had a good look at the upper and lower ball joints that seem to be in good working condition. there is no slop in the steering either. also another thing to note is that when i am crawling in traffic i notice a wobble at speeds of 0-5km/h. is it safe to say that i should investigate the condition of my tires? currently running 31x10.5x15 baha mtzs stock suspension

Could be any manner of causes. As a start inspect your tires, and make sure wheels are properly balanced. Set tire pressure to 28 PSI. Check alignment as well, toe in should be set at 1/8 inch. Drive it. If still issues get back to us. Lots of resources and knowledgeable members here to help further if needed.

My 04 had a shake like a out of balance tire that would show up at 50 mph. I chased this for about a year doing things like swapping wheels and tires with other jeeps, replacing front wheel bearings and checking the front and rear axles. While checking the ball joints for the 25th time I noticed a clip missing from a U joint on the stub shaft. When I started cleaning things up I found it had an internal snap ring holding the cup in the yoke of the stub shaft. ???????? I found one of the ears of the yoke was bent inward, (the reason for the smaller thickness clip) and probably caused by improper use of a press while changing u joints. I replaced the stub shaft and the u joint and the shake is gone.

First move the tires around and see if it changes. Front to back, back to front.

This. I wouldn’t throw parts yet, start eliminating variables that can be the problem, tires/wheels are first.

Thank you for noting that- I’ve been guilty myself of just throwing parts at something-

All it really means is that you’re not sure and guessing-Sometimes we justify it because we know things need freshened up- But I have done it to the point that I nearly ran out of money and could not hardly afford to fix the problem once I found it when younger.

One of the things that our really seasoned guys on here have always done is encourage us to diagnose first- And it really makes you understand the vehicle better.
