I knew a guy in the Navy who was cleaning a boat engine using gasoline. He put it together and attempted to start it using a screwdriver on the starter solenoid. In the ensuing explosion and fire he suffered third degree burns over his arms and hands, second degree burns on his head, face, and chest, and first degree burns everywhere else. He was disqualified from combat, so the Navy sent him to our (oceanographic) ship. He could not bend any fingers or his arms. Eating was a painful exercise for him. After about a year they finally gave him a medical discharge.
Gasoline is in such common use that many people don't realize how dangerous it can be.
Think liquid TNT.
