TJ front seats wont tumble forward

It is an easy fix if the cable hasn't roped through. Also not hard to add a cable end and fix it for good.

Drivers side tumbles but not as far as the passenger because of steering wheel. I often have a very hard time getting the drivers side to go back. When I rarely have back seat passengers I have them get in passenger side because there is more room but I like the drivers does it to grab stuff out.

I have a 97 and my driver's side doesn't tumble forward? Is that common for the 97?

My 97 only has the tumble feature on the passenger side. But I like that, because it gives more room under the driver's seat. I put a Rockford Fosgate PS-8 under there, whereas others on this forum who tried couldn't.

I've owned a '97, a '98 and an '01. On all 3 the driver side seatback leaned forward using the strap or the lever behind the seat, but would not slide or tilt forward using that. You could slide it only using the bar underneath the front of the seat.

On the passenger side it would lean the seatback forward, slide forward and tilt the entire seat using the lever or strap.

If they made one for the driver side that operated the same way then it's news to me.

Andy-WhiteTJ - I'm new here and I sure there is a happy ending to your profile picture...at least I hope so.
That was the first trail run after completely rebuilding the motor and doing a frame swap back in 2010. I brought it home, replaced the windshield frame and hood, put on corner guards on the rear since putting it back on it's wheels did more damage then the roll over, and put it back on the road. I've been driving and wheeling it since.

IN 03 and 04 they made only one seat tumble, the passenger's side. In 05-06 both tumble. I don't know about other models.

My 1998 has fold and tumble on both sides and has the cable so no reaching under. Like everyone else's, the passenger side moves forward automatically.

My Son's 2003 Sahara only has the passenger side fold and tumble with the cable. No Driver's side at all.

My Daughter's 2004 has the passenger side with the cable and the driver side does fold and tumble but no cable. You have to reach under.

Very weird.

So the lever is on the back side of the driver's seat?
I'm not in the Jeep today, but will look when I get home.

Yep, and it makes it lean forward, but not slide or tilt. See pictures below

The driver side seatback tilt is mostly useless. You can kinda reach behind the seat after doing it, but it's still pretty tight when the seat is slid all the way back (which it seems like it is for most people)

My strap is broken but I probably won't fix it because I never use it.

I had to fix both seats in my 06. The mechanisms failed in two different ways, I couldn’t use the method of a new cable that was posted in the “how to” thread. I did manage to get both working with some zip tie creativity!

Look under the front of the seat towards the console. There should be a lever to press down to the floor that will tumble the seat forward. I usually can feel it without having to look. Sometimes my cable from the seat back tipping forward doesn't actuate the seat's tumble feature. Cable may be stretched.

BTW, those look exactly like my seats.

Well I'll be...just found that little lever under the front next to the slide bar. Never knew it was there! I learn something new on here every day!

Lever on the back does not make it slide or tumble, but front does. I'll investigate further later and see if it needs some work. Here's a picture with my finger pushing it down for anyone curious:

There was a post on another forum on how to get the lever on the back to work the lever underneath with the cable and it had the part number on it. Can't seem to find it now.

Mine (2001) has driver's (RH) seat working fold and tumble; passenger (LH) cable intact but missing a part which should attach it to the lever which pushes down on the pad.

Despite much head scratching I’ve not found a solution to reattach it and the cable is made of pure unobtanium, at least in the UK. Even the local Chrysler Jeep dealer gave up on it, although to be fair they did try quite hard.

I don’t think that is the part I need - though I now can’t find it in the parts manual, it’s not that shape at the ends.

Hey guys. I just checked and could not find a lever from the rear of the front seats. I looked from the front of the seats and found the lever. My drivers side does the tumble also. The cable in the seat is broken so the tab in the seatback or the lever on the back of the seat does not work for tumbling the seat forward, but the levers accessed from the front of the seats work great.
