When was the oil slinger deleted on the 4.0?

I just changed the timing chain on my '03 and was surprised to see that there was no oil slinger between the timing cover seal and crank. The Factory Service Manual shows one, but it was clearly deleted at some point. That said, does anyone know when and why it was deleted? There are some references on the web to changes made to the seal and balancer as the reason, but nothing definitive.

Ha! I'm glad you posted this because I've been searching all over my shop for where I misplaced mine on an '04 - 4.0l You are correct the factory service manual shows it but I sure didn't find the one I "misplaced" and I don't even remember it at all during disassembly. I want to know the reasons as well, but good to have some confirmation!

I have a few questions:
I was wondering why you changed your timing chain?
How many miles on engine and how did you know you needed to change it?

The Jeep has 180K miles on it. When I dropped the oil pan to install a new rear main seal and oil pump I could see deflection (i.e. movement) in the timing chain (You can see the bottom of the timing chain (at the front of the engine) with the oil pan removed). The Factory Service manual says if there's 1/2" or more of deflection, change it. I had more than 1/2", so I changed it. FWIW, with the new timing chain, there is no deflection now. (y)
