Do many people here have automatic transmissions?

I live at high altitude driving regularly in the mountains and haven't found a reason to do this yet. FWIW.

I've had multiple TJs/LJs with the 42RLE. With the correct gearing, I've never felt a need to do this modification. Generally, the only time I use the OD off switch is on the trail. If one doesn't re gear, I could see it being useful though, to help until you do.

TLDR: If you are running KoH, you probably should go with a built auto tranny. Otherwise, use what you prefer
The sad part about that is built autos have taken out more folks who only had to finish and get across the line to be #1 on the podium. The sadder part is no one with a manual has ever made the podium in the Unlimited class.

Brakes are going to be the next upgrade I make, I'm sure. Mine are OK...not great, with BMB pads and the manual. From others experience after a swap, they won't be good enough with the Auto.
I can't remember ever not being able to stop with my BMB brakes when in 4Lo with my automatic, 4:1 tcase, and 5.38 gearing with 35's.

You know who doesn't give the tiniest of shits about what that number means? Most anyone with an auto, that's who.

Because who cares about stalling with an auto.

And with an auto the shitty number was 118 and it was every bit as awesome :D

I'm going to try it. Based on conversations with Blaine, all TJs stop differently. BMB pads and 33's were GREAT, I had good brake power. Since I switched to 35's, I can feel the decrease in Braking and I can't lock them up now. I can get a little bit of noise on the first couple stops...but I can also feel the knuckles and calipers flexing. Mine seems to have a bit less braking power.

I'm also going 42RLE vs your 32RH

So, when am I sending over a big brake kit?

Mine was the 6 speed when I got it. I only use it for wheeling, so had the 42RLE auto swapped in. One of the best mods I've done. The manual is great for street driving and driving up mountains. The auto is better for wheeling. The only time I miss the manual is driving up to the mountains.

I do have another friend that swapped out the auto (mine) and put in a 5 speed. It's all a matter of preference.

42RLE Auto... because I'm old!

To each their own, but I've never understood this.

I started riding motorcycles in 1977, and driving in 1983. I didn't own a vehicle with an automatic until 1997 (an SVT Lightning which I wish I still had). During this time - and until November of 2021 - I lived and commuted in the DC Metro Area, which is frequently cited as the worst traffic in the country. I have owned several stick-shift vehicles since, and still ride motorcycles, and have never wished for an automatic in any situation, ever.

Pretty much this. {Insert rant about soft, effete, pussified Americans here} I got talked into buying an automatic to tow our fifth-wheel. It did OK, but I was BORED outta my skull. When I replaced that truck, I got a manual.
