I plan to replace my bumper soon. It has a pipe bumper on it now but it needs a new one soon. Debating on a swing out bumper tire carrier or just a regular bumper. Pros and cons both ways?

Thanks.

Get a carrier that mounts to the body/tailgate. Having to open a carrier before opening the tailgate is a pain. Plus, a body mounted carrier is stronger and sturdier than a single pivot point on a bumper

Unless you have a use case for a swing set, stick with a tailgate mounted spare.

I like the options that my swing set allows.

You probably don't need a swing out.
(Unless that's what you want.)
What size tires, and how much do you wheel it?

31 inch tires. Mostly relatively mild off roading. Don’t rock crawl nor do I go looking for the max mud or body damage.

what size tire you running? If a 35 or less, check out the Moryde tailgate Hinge system

Again, unless you're wanting a swing sway, you don't need one.
You really don't need anything other than the stock carrier for 31s.
If you're concerned about the tailgate hinges, you can upgrade them.

My OEM spare carrier held the OEM Rubicon size 30.5x9.6 for nearly a decade without issue.

IMHO anything more than a alloy wheel and stock tire will eventually waste the tailgate. I put a Dirtworx swing out on mine. Very very nice setup and more more rattles. Robert makes great stuff.

The last thing I'd run would be a bumper-mounted swingout tire carrier. Their pivot points are seldom up to the task and often the bumper itself isn't strong enough to support the swingout mount.

This is (was) a Smittybilt swing-out tire carrier.

I think that is likely true for many purchased bumper mount swing outs, but it’s a consequence of bad (read: inexpensive) design. Built correctly, with heavy enough components, the design works well and holds up.

Many here have seen mine. I run a bumper mounted swing away, which both swings out and swings down, that has held a very heavy 40” spare for well over a decade of hard wheelin’. Very easy to open and close, and I can get that 40” spare on and off, five feet off the ground, by myself. And I personally would not run that heavy spare on a body mounted carrier.

But, it’s the farthest thing from an off the shelf carrier, so there is that…🙂

Different circumstance for the OP, but I did want to defend the oft disparaged design.
