Should I re-gear for 33s or get smaller tires?

There is a tag on the Differential casing with a load of numbers on it would that give me an idea of her gearing.

Blaine can be a dick but he always has a lesson to be taught and knowledge to be imparted from engaging with him.

It’s really not as bad as everyone makes it sound, I mostly avoid freeways and I was topped out at around 55-60 on the freeway, but after a while you just change your driving style a bit, plan turns well ahead of time and it’s perfectly fine, it wasn’t a race car and I regeared for a reason but it’s definitely liveable as long as you accept the inherent flaws to doing it.

It was probably doable if you lived in a pretty flat state

Mine is an ‘06 model with a 4 liter with a 6 speed manual trans. When I bought it it already had a 3” lift & 33” tires on 15 wheels, but it still had the original 3.07 gears & it was terrible! I knew before I bought it that it would need to be regeared. I went with 4.56 gears which made a drastic improvement. One thing about regearing is that you can install limited slips or lockers while the gear work is being done anyway & save a lot of labor costs. I had True Track limited slips installed & they work great for me. Since you said that you don’t really do much off roading this would probably be a good choice for you.
Here is some “before & after” data concerning my gear swap that will show you the improvement that I gained.
I agree with the others that said you would need 4.88 gears for your 2.5 liter.

would 4.56 be a happy medium between 4.10 and 4.88 with the 33's? Aalso i have a buddy says he can help me out when i am ready to regear any idea on coast if we do the work? So many thongs you can do choices are tough. And thank you for all the replies for I am new to the TJ world
I’ve got a 99 SE manual ax5 with 33s and 4.10s right now. I live in Colorado and daily my Jeep 38 miles to and from work on a 65mph highway that everybody goes 75 on. I tend to use turn lanes as slow vehicle pullover lanes especially on windy days… I can never use 5th gear unless going downhill and have a strong backwind. I will be regearing to 5.13. Which is the lowest ratio I can fit in a Dana 30/35 combo. If I could go lower I would. You might want to consider being on the fence between 4.88 and 5.13. Our little 4 bangers can really use that extra gearing.

Edit: I should mention, don’t be afraid of high rpm’s in these 2.5l engines. I bring mine up to 4-4.5k rpm in 3rd when tackling large hills. It gulps down gas but these engines hold up very well to the rpm they are rated to run at.
