Replacement key advice

Stop already. The SKIM system was available in the TJ starting in 98. Every PCM 98 and up has the function built into it and able to be enabled with the installation of the SKIM module and SKIM keys programmed to the system.
Stop what? Sounds like you need to not jump to conclusions on peoples posts. I Was not referring to when it started. Was just asking if his key was black or grey because you can get the black key done by any competent locksmith.

Then there is no need to include the year. ;)

You can tell by my post above, I do not know much about the SKIM/key. So a question, Is it possible... To remove the SKIM module and not use a "Programed key" ? I have little to NO worry about someone stealing the jeep. I didnt even know i had the SKIM, If I didnt have the SKIM it wouldnt bother me at all.
My end goal would be to be able to use a reguar no programed key (black) if i needed spares just go any where and have it cut for a few dollars.
Just a question.

I recently took ownership of a 2002 TJ - only one key and it is gray. From what it seems I can't have a new one programed because I need two keys. What is the best step for me going forward to get two sets of keys?

If you have two uniquely coded keys, you can self program up to 8 total. The best way is to find someone with a DRB and have them do it. I have heard of locksmiths who have something that does work, I am not familiar.

I was in the same situation when I bought my first TJ. I called a locksmith and they knew what I was talking about so I drove the jeep down there. I had previously bought some blank chip keys on ebay. They were able to cut and program another chip key. They also cut a regular (non chip) key in this process as apparently this was needed as well. I had them cut my other chip key but not program it. I was able to program this key using the procedure outlined in the owners manual or FSM or wherever it is.

I wanted to program the third key myself as apparently these chip keys can be cloned, where you don't have two unique keys, just two of the same key. In this case, you will not be able to program keys yourself. You need two unique keys in order to do this. Also note, you will need to bring the jeep to the locksmith, not just the key. I'll see if I can find the thread where I went thru this.

Awesome! Yeah, the one key I have is VERY worn as it easily slips out when the ignition is on... So I'm hoping maybe a new key would fix that and also keep me from being locked out. Thanks man!

Also, as Blaine said, the dealership can do this assuming they have the DRB tool and someone who still knows how to use it.

This is a long thread, but look for my posts on it. It was originally unclear whether a locksmith could do this correctly. Just be sure to ask the locksmith about your specific vehicle, tell them it has a security chip in the key, and I also asked whether they clone the key, or actually program a unique key.

I have a Mitsubishi Raider, (Dodge Dakota with different sheet metal), that has a SKIM key. I made several regular keys, then took the SKIM key and zip tied it to a wire bundle inside the steering column. That way I can use a plain key since the SKIM key is close to the sensor.

Our 2004 tj had a chip key and a door key.. we went to a local locksmith they cut us thee extra keys and showed us how to program them in the ignition switch.. like magic we had good ignition keys.. one was hidden on the exterior so we could always have an emergency spair with the vehicle .. just incase..
You can program a new key if you have two keys already. Up to some limit I forget how many. I have always known this and have four keys.
i can "lose" two and still make a new one.

I haven't lost any in 19 years lol.

I find it funny when people I know lose the only key they have. Not even programmed. Get a clue morans!

If you have two it's a good idea to make a third and put it somewhere safe. If you have one it's not a bad idea to clone and forget about the whole deal.
