I am ordering an Atlas 2 transfer case and would like to verify something before I finalize everything. My jeep is a 2000 TJ with 4.0L, 32RH Auto Transmission, Dana 30 front, Ford 8.8 rear with 4.56 gears and 35" tires.

The question I have is about the input shaft for the transmission. I know the 32RH has a 23 spline shaft, but there is a short (2") and a long shaft available from Advanced Adapters. Which is correct for the 2000 3 speed?

Any advice would be appreciated. Accurate advice would be greatly appreciated. :p


As a second thought, I have chosen 4.3 as a low gear. Any reason to change to 5.0?

Don’t know about the input shaft.

If you want even more control go with the 5.0, but with an auto transmission I don’t think it matters a lot.

I would hate to mislead you as it could be expensive but I swapped a 241 into my 2000 TJ with 32rh. The 241 has a short input and because of that I had to get a seal housing extension for the back of the transmission to push the seal back enough to mate up with the external diameter of the 241s short input shaft.

I've never bought an atlas but Im pretty sure given the above you need the long input.
 
According to Novak Adapters you have the short input. And BTW there are actually 3 lengths.

I would have thought so as well, but when I called them the tech was unsure. I believe the short input is correct, just looking for verification.

Sounds like the shorty. Remove the case and measure. Then you’ll know 4sure. Not fun, but good practice for the swap!

I'd go 5.0 if I was getting an Atlas. Definitely take all the advantages it has to offer

Agreed. I would lean towards 5:1 even with the automatic because the higher engine rpms would help with the modulation and control.

I have the 4.3 and for crawling the 5.0 would be even better BUT the 5.0 would be totally unusable for trail driving you’d have to go 4 hi for anything but a short stretch.

That’s my life with 4:1. It’s not bad in 4H on snowy trails, and it’s nice to have the 4:1 when you meet obstacles. Ideally a 4-speed Atlas.

Even if you don’t use the compound low at least you have 2.73 or 4-1

I've decided on the 5.0. Looking at the numbers on grimmjeeper, the speed difference in 3rd gear at 3000 rpm is about 2mph. Not enough for my seatcrometer to notice. I am looking forward to a lower ratio. I borrowed a friend's rubicon and had the chance to compare the 231 to the 241. I now understand why I have struggled on rocks the rubis just walked up.

Yes, that’s where the rubicrawler would be so great. 2.76 is perfect for trail, 5.0 perfect for rocks.

Hence my reluctance to swap engines. 42RLE with Rubicrawler and 241 is pretty damn good. That LS head 3.6L 4 banger I’ve been seeing has my attention.

I’ve always thought a Rubicrawler in front of an Atlas 2.0:1 would be the perfect setup for a TJ. That would result in a driveline much shorter than stock, and therefore a much longer rear driveshaft (shorter front as well).

But crazy expensive…

Absolutely 2.76 or whatever the 231 has is too little ratio to keep traction in my experience. You will love it!

Dam that really is a fantastic ratio setup. Not sure I ever considered that. Blaine had an idea of making a 1.2 or something which would fix the dam 42RLE ratios.

Coolest thing is you can run trails all day long in 2.0:1, hit a technical section and with one very easy pull of the rubicrawler shifter you are in 5.44:1. Just as easy to go back to 2:1 once you are through.
