Front lockouts or Yukon spin free hubs discussion

I keep hoping to come across a trail spare. May need to order a set before this summers wheeling season.

You know how it works. If you have a spare, you won't break one. If you don't, it is practically guaranteed that you will on something fairly innocuous that no one has ever broken anything on.

It is such a simple fix, would be silly not to carry a spare. Less worried about breaking it internally as I am of contact with non moving objects.

Yep, which is exactly why I don't like the Warn Lock-outs. The only product that Yukon makes that I actually use and like is their hardcore hub kits for the 5.5" and up hub conversions and Ford stuff. More than a bit fiddly to get set up correctly but when you do, they are actually pretty neat. Very low profile, maybe stick out 1/2". Stainless steel so even if you do get into them, you may scratch them but you aren't going to break them on a rock, they default locked. That means you can remove the outer hub portion, tape over hole and drive out still locked up. (tape isn't required, just keeps the dirt out)

They have 3 notable downsides. They are very positive so they need some manipulation to unlock, usually turning the steering wheel back and forth to relieve the bind does it. Warn uses a spring that compresses to move the locking clutch when it lines up so they aren't locked until that happens. These are the opposite. The spring pushes them locked automatically and the hub lock pushes the clutch back against the spring.

They require knowledge of how stuff works to set up correctly. And the biggie is they are too much money now. Right at 400 for a pair of hub locks is ridiculous.

To satisfy my curiosity, I called Warn this morning. They told me that they have obsoleted the 37780 hub as of May of last year. The only way to get one is to see if any of their vendors still have any in stock. Once stock is depleted, we are up the proverbial shits creek!

Well, that answers more than a few questions. I'm now fully regretting helping a few folks out with spares for way too cheap.

Looks like the 37780 may have been discontinued as early as 2016, old stock was probably available for a while after. So we most likely have been using the other 29070 hub for some time.

No. That was the older Ranger one. The 37780 was developed when Warn made the rear lock out (Full Float) kit for the Dana 35. The 37780 was supposed to be a heavier duty unit compared to the 29070

Was 37780 ever supplied in the front hub kit?

Yes. That was what was used in the Warn Conversion Kit as well as the Warn Full Float kit. My instructions and parts list from Warn states that the hub part number is the 37780. Not sure what Yukon supplied.

Your kit was an actual warn kit then?
From what I could find there are posts online around 2016 stating the HD hub was being discontinued. I didn’t install my kit until a couple years ago so I’m fairly certain it is not the HD hub. They have held up fine to my 35” tires and
7-1 low range. I am fairly conservative anyway. More concerned about knocking the end off of them than anything else.

Yes. Mine was a Warn kit I purchased in 2007. I've broken a couple of hubs over the years and I was able to purchase 37780 hubs from various vendors here and there to replace the broken ones. Now I may have to look at other options if I break.

I got a replacement 'big' style outer hub from Warn a couple years ago, well after they sold the hub business to Yukon. It wouldn't hurt to call their customer service department and ask if they have what you need. And what astounded me was they sent it to me for free after I told the guy I broke it on the trail.

I did call Warn this morning. They said the discontinued the hub and had none left. Hence our conversation here.

I have called them for winch or bumper parts that I couldn’t find, they have always sent them out no charge. Warn has always done right by me.
Was the difference between the hubs housing size or was there internal differences?

It looks like Yukon has switched to AVM for the hubs based on the OP picture. The question then is if they are supplying the AVM465 or the AVM465HP which is a higher strength hub.
