Has anyone taken a Rancho RS9000 shock apart?

I have been trying to find out why I should not order a set of the fox performance remote resi. They have slightly better length than my current 9000s and I can have them tuned. Need to find a reliable tuner that does the performance series. But a tunable 10.6” bolt on front shock would prevent me from doing custom mounts in the front. That is a lot of senseless work for .4” of travel.
The rear is a different story all together.

Not sure if this would be of any help....I used Accutune for my custom tuned Fox shocks. They did a nice job and give you 1 additional tune to use in the future should you want.

To be the devils advocate... yes changing engine oil can be tuning... modern engines use such advance alloys that engine oil can be thinned down to 0w20... This maximizes economy but still adequately lubricates spiny thingies. When I supercharged the 3.6 in my Gladiator, I changed the oil weight to 5w20 per the recommendation of the supercharger company. This supposedly reduced ring blow by and helped keep things lubricated under boost.

Race teams often use pressure to alter a shocks performance on the go. Its a band aid, because they don't always have the time to pull all of the shocks and properly re tune. The driver says "its a little soft on the big stuff" and the tuners will add x amount of nitrogen pressure.

What your doing may be silly, but I say hell yeah. Lets Learn something.

We add pressure to see if we are blowing out the compression valving on a top fed shock. If the pressure stops piston plunge or slows it down, then we know some things.

I haven’t gone through any trouble. This is theory haven’t done anything. Worst case I swap the same oil back into my shocks and I learn something?

Many moons ago they had "tunable" shocks on RC cars in 1/10th scale. The way you tuned them to flatten out the chassis response on jumps to get them to land flat on all four was to change the weight of the oil in the shocks and it did work.

But the fact that you want to is perplexing claiming to have been around shock tuning. This experiment is the equivalent of hitting your hand with a hammer to see if it hurts to hit your hand with a hammer.

Throwing in the troll card on this thread.

Yes we did tune shocks where I work but I never did. It was also about 20 years ago the last time we did. I picked a few brains about it at the shop. Like I said I am not a shock tuner. They were also tuning shocks for off road not street use and it was pre internet.

Thank you for this. To be clear again it’s an oil change lol!

To be crystal clear, if you are expecting no change then it isn't tuning, you are just doing maintenance. If you are trying to effect a change to affect how the shock performs, it is tuning. You can call it whatever blows your skirt up, you can't change what you are doing though. You aren't a Democrat are you? Because they excel at calling something obvious that clearly isn't or something that is, to be something else. Fess up.

Lol not a Democrat! Sounds funny from a guy from California! I do have a few tricks up my skirt .

I had forgotten about that, but remember tuning my rc10 that way. Very effective

I'm not from California. I just live here to further my education on how to identify a Democrat.

This sounds exactly like what a democrat works day. I'm watching you

*Would say* my auto correct hates me.
