Hey y'all, I installed a coolant filter setup a few months ago on the 2005 LJ. My plan was to run it for a few thousand miles, then cut it open and see what it caught or didn't catch. I ended up putting right at 3000 miles on the setup with the filter installed. Pretty shocking the amount of rust and crud it sucked up.

Interesting theory. I suppose in a perfect world, the coolant would never get dirty - but we don’t live in a perfect world.

I’ll be curious to see how filters 2 and 3 look. I wonder if you’ll get less and less crud as time goes on?

I won't know. I changed out the radiator for a new Mopar and flushed the block.

I'd like to see one from a well maintained system.

I just replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat and hoses. I pulled the block plug and ran clean water through the block and heater core. The system should be pretty clean now. I will probably cut open another one in 6 months.

Running clean water through is not the same as a good flush that removes all the rust and scale.

A couple of pics of the filter installed. Between the filter and the lines it probably holds an additional quart of coolant. I placed it lower than needed to get the base of it in the slipstream under the inner fender. When my new engine is done, hopefully in a month or so I am going to wrap that downpipe down past the starter. That should help for heat as well.

That’s pretty slick, what all did you use for the install? Kit or did you have to piece mail it.

I make the filter bases here. Actually it is the same base that I make for the remote trans, fuel, and coolant filters. The only real difference is the filter stud threads. The rest of the lines and such I just pieced together.

Yuck. I bet I could use one of those, when I flushed my coolant system it just wouldn't stop coming out brown. I ran out of space for dirty water and gave up lmao

No concern about a rock getting thrown at it and punching a small hole in it? Seems vunrable in that spot.

I suppose you could get one up there. I could mount it up higher, or do a skid. Probably not an issue for what I do.

Jezza, interesting project, did you observe any coolant flow reduction, I imagine the restriction of a filter would restrict coolant rate fairly significantly? Did you take any steps to compensate for this restriction?
