Easiest location to tap into the reverse light wire

Hello anyone know where the reverse light wire is in the head unit of 2015 rubicon unlimited? I'm trying to add back up camera. I spliced to reverse light in back of jeep wire colors black ground and grey/white but I have no clue where to splice the red wire tail of the yellow rca jack in the head unit to?

Hello!

Just an FYI, you will get much more accurate information on a JK forum, such as this one:
https://wranglerjkforum.net/
Jeeps are broken down into year categories based on letter codes. 1997-2006 Jeep Wranglers are referred to as TJs, and 2007-2018 Jeep Wranglers are referred to as JKs. The newer 2018+ Jeep Wranglers are called JLs.

So a JK forum like the one linked will have much better and more applicable advice than this one, which is only for 1997-2006 TJ wranglers.

Good luck!

Anyone else go to this much trouble for their reverse lights? A single switch that can 1) turn lights on for extra lighting, 2) come on automatically with reverse for trails, and 3) be turned off completely for parking lots.
I have all my lights wired that way. switch 1 is for fog lights. Switch 2 is for outside set of driving lights. Switch turns on both sets of driving lights, switch 4 is for backup lights. Up is on, center is off, down turns on 1,2 or 3 with the high beams, 4 with the backup lights.

In my 2004 with a factory auto-dimming mirror the reverse wire is Purple with a black trace. Accessible from directly inside of the radio cavity.
Agree it's the purple with black trace. Unfortunately mine isn't in the radio cavity in my 2004. Mine is accessible in the driver's side kick area, there are three separate pin harnesses, the one highest up has the purple with black trace reverse trigger wire. That's where I tapped in for my setup.

After referencing the 2006 Jeep TJ Service manual referenced above on page 820, it looks like the backup light color is white/light green. (not purple/black) I am just adding that point here to save someone a little time when trying to figure that out for themselves.

You aren't saving anyone any time whatsoever unless they happen to be working on the 05-06 models. Before that, the violet with the white trace goes into the reverse light switch and violet with the black trace goes out to the reverse lights.

That is true, but it is my intention to save owners of those late year TJ's from looking for a purple wire with a black trace. I may not have made that fact clear in my post. I can say from my own experience, digging through the service manual after spending time erroneously looking for a purple wire with a black trace does take time.

Then it should have been something along the lines of-

Jeep changed the color of the reverse light wire in 05 through 06 to be white with a light green trace which differs from the earlier models that use violet with the white and black traces.

Schwieb, thank you for the info, you just saved me a lot of time and headaches for locating the wire for my ‘05 LJ. I’m glad I searched for this and saw your post before I started looking for that damn purple/black wire that I’ve been reading so much about.

(Sorry for the double post, I don’t know why this didn’t post the first time I submitted but then popped up when I tried again).

Old thread.

I plug the reverse wire off the HU into the + off the RCA cable.

Run the RCA cable along the wire harness in the tub to the grommet at the left rear.

Splice the + from the camera and + from the RCA cable to the reverse wire at the taillight.

I do not use butt connectors. If I need to remove the HU or camera, I want to be able to disconnect the harness without cutting any wires.

I tapped into the wire off my 5 speed shifter harness under the console.

Don't quote me on it, but IIRC it was purple & black.

According to the 2001 shop manual it is purple/black but who knows if that stays the same for every model year

It definitely does not stay the same. I know from experience that it is different for the 2006 TJ as referenced above. You should definitely double check the manual.
