AT-205 re-seal works like a charm for rear main seal leaks

It might be a really handy trick on the trail. I've seen some of your discussions about fluid swaps to get you home (water for brake fluid, etc).

It really doesn't work like stop leak in a cooling system which has particles of crap that plug holes. The "stop leak" stuff you put in oil just softens and swells the seals. If the rear main doesn't swell enough to tear itself up, I struggle to see what other seals would be adversely affected. My biggest concern would be the valve stem seals but I've never heard of anything untoward happening there so who knows? Seems that it would be pretty noticeable when the extra smoke out the tail pipe is visible from burning oil.
For the record, I'll confirm no errant smoke out of the tail pipe.

A look at the SDS for AT-205 and BlueDevil RMS shows that they both use the same chemical.
AT-205 — Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether — CASRN 111-90-0 — >90%
BlueDevil — Di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether — CASRN 111-90-0 — up to 100%

The BlueDevil is a lot more affordable and available, at least in my neighborhood.
I'm going to try some, since I was about to replace my RMS soon anyway.
Interesting find. Please share results.
I got the AT-205 from Amazon, so no issue or challenge with finding it.

Hey, we all have brake fluid sitting around. Who wants to pour some in their engine first? o_O
um.... I'm good with what I have. Have at it.

I'm not admitting to or recommending anything but I do know that a couple of capfuls of brake fluid in the oil will stop a rear main seal leak until the next oil change.
That there ^^^^ is interesting.

Seriously?
I wish I got to hang on the trail with you guys. I love creative fixes when the chips are down.

I wonder if using a cap ful of Blue Devil or AT 205 vs a full treatment, just a cap full or two at changes, would be a helpful plan. My TJ is dry, and has been, so I’m doing nothing different for now personally than high mileage oil I’ve been using.

I’m super curious if these are the same additives in High Mileage oil, but every article like this one from Valvoline say they are “trade secrets”.

https://www.valvoline.com/en-eur/when-to-start-using-high-mileage-oil/

I’m also a little shocked with the quote from Valvoline below, I thought the additives were to condition the RMS, basically, to help it swell and seal. Valvoline is stating it “fills in tiny microscopic holes in metal?” I looked up Valvoline because they make the Napa high mileage I’ve been using.

“The main difference between regular motor oils and high mileage ones is typically in the additives that have the task of minimizing the roughness on the engine’s metal surfaces by filling the tiny microscopic cracks thus creating smoother mechanical surfaces.”

I added BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer, and have driven about 150 miles. No change, still drips a drop or two every day.

Our ‘03 still drips as bad as it did before the various treatments that I have tried.
I’m about ready to switch to gear oil… 😂

Anyone have updated results they can share?

You need to ask @MikekiM. He has been summoned.

Looks like AT-205 is pretty legit according to Project Farm. For those who watch the video… do you think the increased wear marks on the lubricity test are enough that it’ll actually make a difference in engine longevity or is it in all reality going to be negligible?

I just watched the YouTube Farm Project channel a couple nights ago where he tested various seal restorer/leak stop additives. As I recall after he added AT-205 to a lube and ran a wear test it didn't do well at all, it caused significantly more wear than most of the others. Others had essentially the same problems too or didn't work well as a seal restorer, I wasn't impressed by any of them overall. I'll stick with High Mileage engine oils without adding anything else like AT-205.

Happy to report completed another oil change and continue have with no RMS leak...
Take it for what it's worth

Are you adding another dose of AT-205 with every oil change? Or was it a one and done thing for you?

What oil are you using?

I just completed the 2nd high mileage conventional 10w-30 oil change in my jeep at 86,000 miles. It seems my small RMS leak has stopped leaking onto the driveway all together. It was leaking about a quarter size drop or two a day.
