Gearing question

Hello everyone.... just needed some opinions...

I recently purchased a used and abused 2000 jeep tj. It is standard, on 35s, dana 30 in front and 35 in the rear. I know this is a recipe for disaster, let's also add that the rear is locked by a homemade weld job. The transfer case lever is also disconnected.

I have plans to change the axles.

However, when checking the gearing in the rear I jacked the diff, spun the tire one rotation while I counted the turns of the drive shaft. It ended up with 4.

When I did this to the front I ended up with only 1.

Does anyone know why this would be? Is there something I'm missing?

Any help would be appreciated....

Since the rear is locked, it's easy to count. The front is probably an open diff which really you need to rotate the tire twice and count the total rotations. Or have somebody spin the other tire in unison with you to count the rotations.

Or, just take the time to do a diff service, change the gear oil by removing the diff covers and count the teeth on both to be absolutely sure. That's a better method than counting rotations.

If the TCase shift lever is disconnected you can't put it in 4wd. Maybe the PO did that to keep anyone from engaging 4wd because the front is geared differently than the rear. 2wd locked Jeep?

But I agree with the above, the best way to find out is to remove that front diff cover and count the ratio of teeth from ring and pinion.
