So I ended up with a set of 285/70R17s from someone whose Jeep was totaled recently. I know I’ll definitely need a lift kit before too long, but I’m wondering if I’d be able to use them until then, considering I’m only ever on the road.

People do it. I wouldn't. 32.7x11.2" Buy them and install them when you lift it. If they're JK wheels, you still need wheel adapters/spacers.

Also, would a 2.5 inch lift and a 1.25 body lift be good enough?

Sound like you already have them and are they mounted on rims? Wheel -off sets are always going be a consideration- Call me adventurous but aI Go through them on! A Maybe a little test drive around the block, take a few photos on where it looks tight.

They’re at the guy’s mechanic who’s closed over the weekend, so I should be able to get them Monday.
