Loud squealing noise coming from engine

Thanks for the reply. I'm the second owner. The OP put 91K on it the it now has 105K. I was thinking of upgrading the alternator anyway so maybe I'll start there. I'm planning on driving it 1800+ to TJ Fest so I don't want any issues.

Hey guys, I'm having a similar problem and want to consult here before I drop any money on parts.

My car began making a horrible noise on idle a few weeks ago. I replaced the serpentine belt with the continental belt, but the problem, though inconsistent, remains.

Heres a video of the sound it makes:

I haven't swapped the idler pulley yet so maybe thats what it is? It lingers when I drive but eventually disappears and re-appears as it pleases.

Alternator has been holding a charge perfectly fine, so I don't think it's that.

to track down a squeeling pulley bearing i will spray them with wd40 or lps with the staw when its running. like was said above if it still does it when you remove the belt it aint a pulley bearing !

Hey everyone I’m having this squeak problem as of now. It’s. 1998 wrangler and I’ve replaced the idler pulley and the belt looks to be okay, I’m thinking it’s the power steering pump but I’m just wanting to see what everyone thinks

Spray it, and only it, with a little WD40. See if the sound changes.

This may sound dumb but double check the belt routing, it CAN go on incorrectly and it will squeal if it is. Usually there is a belt diagram on the hood underside or radiator support.

That’s the first thing I’d check before replacing parts.

Are you sure it's actually coming from the belts? Does it sound like this?

Hi Tim! You posted this recording of a screeching sound coming from the front area of your Jeep. I hope you get this message because I have the identical sound coming from my 2006 Jeep LJ. What did you find to be the problem?
Thanks,
Joe

Can someone help me? I have a 97 TJ 2.5 I have replaced throw out bearing and clutch assembly about 3 months ago, and now i have a squeeling coming from the front. I have replaced the Alternator, both pullies, water pump, power stearing pump and a new belt. I have literally replaced every pully in the front and i still have the squealing. So I disconnected the fan belt completely and the squealing is still there. Does anybody have any ideas?

Instead of throwing parts at it, have you tried an automotive stethoscope to find the noise? Or at least a piece of hose/pipe/long screwdriver to listen?

I used a long screw driver for the upper pulleys. Unfortunately i did throw money in the parts already. I have replaced everything except fan clutch and crank shaft pulley. Figured the tj was 20 years old and it wouldn't hurt.

What about the OPDA? Not prone to failure in a ‘97, but if it sounds like a barrel of monkeys laughing it could be.

yea you need to get a stethoscope and track it down. are you sure it's a squealing and not whistling ? I had a 97 4cyl. that had a check valve separate on a vacuum line and it made a high pitched whistling noise.

A pinhole crack on a coolant line can also sound like a belt/pulley and also sounds like it's in the same area.

I had a coolant squeal from the main top line that was only heard above idle and warm.
