LJ prices coming back down

I'm at a point with my LJ that I would only sell it if I needed money to survive, unless someone offered me stupid $$ to buy it, which would never happen with how many miles I have on it. I'm happy to be stuck with it. I'll keep driving it until the wheels fall off (again) and then I'll put 'em back on and drive it some more.

I kinda feel this way too. This year age 48 introduced me to gout pain that had the LJR Manual parked for a few weeks. Debated the auto swap but still seems easier to buy an auto than swap. Damn I like my manual Jeep! On meds and it’s not as bothersome now so we’ll see.

The guy I sold my 99' XJ to ($7,000), asked me if I wanted to buy it back......... for $2500 more than I sold it to him for. I passed. I only sold it to buy my Rubicon back after selling it.
p.s. I still miss it.

@boogieman, that's how I feel about my 2018 6.7 Cummins. But I do have my first V8 Hemi!! Oh, and my 82' Scrambler!!

I've done the gout thing more than once. The last time, 4 years ago, doc put me on Allopurinol daily. Has not been a problem since.

Prices for TJs and LJs here in Ontario are by comparison pretty reasonable. Generally though any that were driven in the winter at all are rotted out and I think that drives the general mood of the market. One of the guys I wheel with has an '05 LJ built on 33s but with a Dana 44 front axle (RCVs, etc) and swapped the tcase for the 241. It is from California and has no rust/rot. He is asking $25k CAD which I think is reasonable and people are balking.

I think clean LJ's will always command a high price. Many I have looked at that pop up on my Facebook are not very clean, or quite bad, and still are asking north of $10k.

I wonder if the rise in popularity of Youtubers like Matt's Offroad Recovery or Dennis Collins have impacted the Jeep market.

We all appear to be drinking too much beer! I had gout in late 2019 while in Baja. The meds weren’t working and I developed a Tophi, a swollen infected lump on the side of my big toe. Went to a clinic in La Paz, and the doctor, who spoke some English, said, David, be a rooster not a chicken! I went into a room to have the tophi lanced. Nurse injected numerous shots of novocaine on the top of the toe. But not the bottom. She grabbed the bottom of the toe….. I soon realized the rooster bit!!!

+1. Don't even mess around with it. Just get the Rx for the Allopurinol, take it daily, and forget about it. I have two manual transmission daily drivers and couldn't clutch either of them during those attacks. Holy Freaking Moly. It hit about the 46 year mark for me but I do like my heavy beers and red meat.

As far as LJs and pricing, I probably bought during the peak about 2 months ago and probably overpaid by $1K but with 90K miles on a totally stock rig, I didn't want to regret it later. I should be able to earn back in labor that $1K overpayment by doing some projects myself.....at least that how my sick brain justifies it. :)

It would be very interesting to see numbers/data around channel views and the "hobby" Jeep (TJ, YJ, CJ, XJ, ZJ, etc.) market. I bet there has been some impact.

I think one of the biggest things people need to remember is you can’t just sell these things on a whim and replace them the next day with an equal rig-

They are at the point where they just aren’t as easy to find as they used to be and you can’t go out and find the perfect color or transmission or whatever combination or year model you are after right away - And the real good ones don’t even go on the market they just end up changing hands. I’m looking at one that I’ll pay over $30,000 for if the seller ever decides and it will never see Facebook marketplace. He will text me and I will go to the bank and get cash and hook up a trailer and go get it.

I can’t guarantee anybody they’ll make a profit on one because you just never know what the previous owner did or didn’t do until you really get deep into it- And if you take too long to evaluate one you’re never going to get to buy it if it’s really a good one. At the same time rushing into something is usually not a good thing either.

I think it is definitely a good market to have experience in. To know what you’re looking for.

My vice is bourbon, and I still seem to be stockpiling it while starting out on Allopurinol. Hoping to be able to get back to enjoying it occasionally!

As for old Jeeps, I’ve got the strong desire burned in lately to find another XJ to tinker with. Prices in my area for a non hacked up one are still steep.

I'm always looking for another XJ. I got my last 99' with 120,000 miles for $3,000 because the guy bought it, then decided he didn't like the color. Desert sand is one of my favorite colors.
