LAKE COUNTY, Indiana - A man was killed, and two teenagers wounded, when they found a grenade inside a grandparent's belongings in Lake County, Indiana on Saturday.

The Lake County Sheriff said that late Saturday afternoon, police responded to an explosion in the Lakes of the Four Seasons.

Father killed, two children injured in grenade explosion

A family had been going through a grandfather's belongings when they found a hand grenade. Someone pulled the pin and it blew up.

A man died at the scene. A 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were rushed to the hospital with shrapnel wounds.

The Porter County Bomb Squad was called to secure the area and determine whether there were more explosive devices.

Whoever was holding the grenade when the pin was pulled would probably be the most injured if they didn't throw it away from them. Could be the Dad who was responsible. Wait for the investigation to run its course before assuming who was responsible. Whoever did pull the pin made a really stupid move.

My guess is that the father assumed it was not a real grenade.

My guess

“Hey dad, catch”

A relative of a friend had something not quite as bad happen. Bought a "dummy" grenade at a show. Pulled pin while holding and it blew up. Fortunately it only had what I believe was the detonator, and not the charge. It still blew up well enough to mess up his hand quite bad.

That is pretty crazy that he had a live grenade just lying around. I guess you should think twice even if you think it's a dummy grenade.

I remember in 2nd or 3rd grade: I was at a friends house in the garage with him and his dad. His dad handed me a revolver and told me to check if it's loaded. So sure enough, I pointed it at the ground (angle pointed out of the garage for safety...) and squeezed the trigger a few times before his dad yelled at me to stop. Then chewed me out for pulling the trigger. Of course, I had no idea that wasn't correct. He showed me how to check it. Luckily it wasn't loaded. I didn't realize until later in life how wrong that whole situation was. I'm guessing it was a .22.

that guy was a POS

Mil surp stores still sell inert M2 "pineapple" grenades. I have a couple somewhere around here that I bought as novelties decades ago. The old man might have been a nut job with a real one mixed in with a collection of military stuff.

It wasn't too long ago that a guy was killed by a ricochet from an accidental discharge at a gun range. Gun ws pointed at concrete floor IIRC when the gun discharged. Pulling the trigger on an unknown safe weapon pointed at a hard surface can kill you. Shouldn't have assumed that he was familiar with way to check if the gun was safe but right in making an indelible lesson in gun safety.
