SYE install without pulling 231 transfer case

I am about that tall and all we do is use drive on ramps so you can sit upright under the rig and work away quite easily. I've done many, I don't pull them. And as for the recommendation to get snap ring pliers, a great set of lock ring pliers is more of a need. His job doesn't involve much accuracy so there is that.

I had no idea lock ring pliers were even a thing. That would work way better than snap ring piers...

I ground down the outside edges of some cheap channel locks to function as lock ring pliers, which I also didn't know existed when I started my first SYE. But like most everything, the right tool makes the job much easier.

The lock rings don't have holes like snap rings. And they're bigger and thicker.

In case you don't know, as I didn't until I installed my SYE recently, the snap ring pliers are on the left, the lock ring pliers are on the right:

Snap ring pliers won't do the job. Those lock rings are strong.

The $16 lock ring pliers from the local auto parts store worked fine for me.
I have a set similar to the set on the left side of your first photo. Mine has a set of tips like in your last photo which work fine on the lock rings I have used them on.

The pliers make all the difference. The first one I did my pliers wouldn’t open up wide enough like Jerry mentioned. I had to grind the handles and they worked well enough. I tried using them on the next SY but the knurling was worn. Bought a pair of Knipex, they sucked so I bought these. Pricey but they made it a breeze

compound, that's interesting. I think I got the knipex. got the job done but it certainly wasn't fun.

When I installed my SYE I didnt pull the case but my jeep has lift and 33s so I had pleanty of room and the half that I pulled off I did on the bench and the other half under the jeep. having all the tools was a big help. I did the SYE and RMS the same day and it wasnt that bad.
