TJ forum inspired 4-cylinder to V8 Magnum build

I did not run into any of these problems you have as my donor vehicle was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I just had to made small mods to things to make them work. I did use the GC floor shifter and cut my floor to make it work. I even used the GC shifter cable. However it will not work with my center console. I still need to make my own console. Sorry not much help

Thanks for chiming in. I couldn't remember how you had setup your system.

I am intrigued. This is probably how much more I would spent on misc parts to make my current setup work.

I am wondering if it would work on my transmission since it’s not listed. I don’t mind being a Guinea pig just need to make sure to pickup from a spot that offers returns if I need to return it.

The Art Carr shifter I bought was made for the 727 transmission since they didn't make one for the 46RE. I've only seen the pictures posted of how it mounts on the 42RLE but it looks like it is pretty close how the 46RE works. And from those pictures it appears that should clear your exhaust also.
But as you said just make sure to buy it from someone where you can return it if needed.

Thanks @Wildman. I called Holly and discussed it with them they felt pretty confident that it should be plug-and-play. At most, I should be able to modify one of their included brackets. I just ordered it from Holly since their support was pretty darn good. Will update how that goes.

I appreciate the insight, it looks like I am in new territory. I just ordered the B&M shifter, looks pretty darn good in the pics.

I had initially planned on using the stock radiator but I didn’t like how the hoses would sit relative to the clutch fan I am hoping to keep

It’s a tight fit. Did a mock-up last night using an aftermarket radiator that I got off Amazon. Quality looks pretty good but it’s actually quite shorter than the oem radiator. Doesn’t come with a provision to use the 4.0 shroud I had bought but I think I can overcome that.

Not final fit and not 100% I will clear everything yet but figured I would share from a knowledge share perspective for anyone trying to figure out what route to go.

Of note I ended getting a grand Cherokee fan. It’s about 1 inch smaller than the one the RAM but the clutch I ordered for the grand Cherokee was actually deeper than the rams.

You are going with a mechanical fan?
Once you find the right combination of clutch and fan that fits make sure you keep those part number please. It has been part of the puzzle that has given difficulties to others in the past.

I'm no help with mechanical fans other than what others have done. All that information is in the Magnum Swap Guide thread on JeepForum. I'd have to go read it again to tell you what others used.
I've had a electric fan since my swap was done.

Ok. Finally made some progress enough to tour it around the neighborhood to get a feel for all that’s left.

First my finding. The first radiator I got was just all off. None of the mounting matched and it made trying to find the right clutch fan even harder.

I ended up using this radiator from alloyworks. ALLOYWORKS 3 Row Full Aluminum... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09F9FKYLP/?tag=wranglerorg-20
The holes lines up perfectly with the grill and everything seems to be in correct place. ( props to @Wildman as he called this out a thread I read as recommend by someone. ) Still can’t comment on how well it holds-up and cools, but seems like a much better starting point that what I tried first.
I used this fan clutch, also mentioned on a thread on here but I forgot who mentioned it. It’s slightly more shallow ( not by much) but makes enough of a difference for me.
Hayden Automotive 2781 Premium... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C3F3CA/?tag=wranglerorg-20
I used this factory shroud from ónix that I cut up pretty good:
Omix | 17102.05 | Engine Cooling... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E3CASSU/?tag=wranglerorg-20
I used this fan:

Dorman 620-046 Engine Cooling Fan... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004AI9CSE/?tag=wranglerorg-20

It’s tight but it fits.

Here is a video of first startup with this setup. Note I don’t like my radiator hose setup and trying something new once I get a chance.

A few notes if your considering this swap. Even with a body lift the starter in the drivers side really adds quite a bit of complications as does getting a donor that has a column shifter. The shift lever was one of those. Given the design of the bell housing my clearances are very tight and will likely not be using the down pipe from my donor due to this.

She is running!

I figured out the shifter issue after much frustration I did as follows:
-cut the down pipe on the drivers side to make space for the shifter cable to have the correct angle
- purchased B&M shifter 5 foot cable, the included 4 ft cable that came with the magnum shifter wasn’t long enough for me to route it correctly and get the right angle (B&M 80605 5' Long Performance Shifter Cable)
-i had to purchase a bracket to get the correct angle and transmission lever. ( I used all the parts in the kit (B&M Transmission Brackets and Levers 10497)

This allowed me to overcome my shifter issues and get her on the road. 👀😊

Next… I had to change out my yoke on my axle after one screw broke off installing my new Tom woods drivelshaft. I ended up destroying my rear shocks by adjusting the pinion axle without first loosing up my lower shock bolts ☝️. Learn from me.

I ended up getting some adjustable ranchos and the ride is pretty good.

Finished up with doing some dress up on my compartment.

I didn’t realize it’s been so long since I posted , but the good news is that she has been running with minimal gremlins.

A few gremlins that I had to work on (mostly my mistakes)
Power steering leaks:
-4cyl hose leaking from where pressure sensors was located.( I plugged it with a screw/washer and jb welded it shut.
- high pressure power steering leak due to hose rubbing against a part of the radiator shroud I cut. Replaced with a 6cyl tj hose to get rid of the power steering sensor location
-redid new down pipe /exhaust
-o2 bank 2 sensor obd codes due to mixing up my wiring on the sensors
-turn signals /brake not working ( blown fusible link)
- lose steering ( tightened up bolts on steering shaft )
-Transmission cooling line leak ( replaced with AN tubing )

Even with these issues I have used her non-stop.

Still have a punch list
-can’t get into 4lo ( suspect linkage adjustment )
-obd code due to unexpected voltage preventing me from shifting to first gear
-fan relay obd code
- evap system leak obd code

Will post some pics with a little more time.

That is great news. Glad to hear that you got it running & driving. Those pesky gremlins can be a PITA but it sounds like you're working thru them & checking them off your list.

Yes we need some pictures & video of the Jeep in action.
