Hey all, so I’ve got an issue I’m trying to diagnose and so far all I’ve got is that it’s got to be a clutch issue and it could also be steering column related.

Not really an issue when I first start rolling but after I get where I’m going and I turn into a parking spot in 1st or 2nd and engage the clutch (generally while turning) it makes a pretty loud rattling noise that sounds like the clutch is having trouble engaging or disengaging. The reason I think steering related is that it never does it when I’m coming to a stop light only when I come to a stop while turning. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Welcome!

Does it rattle if you engage the clutch while turning without applying the brakes, or only with brakes applied? I think I’d be checking the brakes out first. Possibly axle u-joints?
Not sure how it could be coming from your clutch, but there are others on here smarter than me. Hopefully they chime in.

Where is the sound coming from? Take the doors off and listen,or at least roll them down. Front? Rear? Inside or underneath?

Is it a rattling? Or a chatter from a limited slip rear axle that doesn't have additive?

Does the jeep need to be actually moving to make the noise? Or when the clutch starts to engage?

Mine is the latter I.e.the rattle starts when the clutch starts to engage and stops once the jeep starts moving. What would that be?

Sounds like the transmission - definitely underneath. Think I probably need to get someone to drive it while I listen…

Brakes don’t necessarily play a part, I’m thinking it’s the axle U joint or something with the axle

Took a video, I’m thinking it’s got to be axle related. Let me know what y’all think. You’ll hear the sound I’m referring to right as I am coming to a stop.

Took it to someone who fixes spider gears and they said the gears looked fine in the front and rear. Replaced the clutch and it’s still making the same noise. Going to start looking at wheel bearings. U-Joints are fine. If anyone has any other recommendations let me know!

He sent a pic of the clutch that had an issue before he replaced it. I trust him enough, he didn’t upsell me on anything he wasn’t sure of.

Hey all! It’s been a minute but I wanted to update the thread. The issue was a welded diff lock, replaced gears and all is well.
