Which Torque Wrench?

I have two SK torque wrenches I bought a decade or two ago. Ft. and In.

Common sense goes a long way when tightening bolts.

Some of the reviews on the HF torque wrenches are amusing. "Trying to torque down my caliper bolts to 20 ft lbs, wrench failed and I sheered the bolt." Common sense failed well before that bolt was sheered...

I like my Craftsman torque wrenches. If I had to do it again, I can't see myself paying that much for working on my own Jeep. Common sense and consistency can probably go a long way when it comes to tightening things down.

I shopped the local used market and came across an old snapon for $50. I'm still using beam type smaller ones for the little stuff but I keep telling myself I'll get the click type next time I do a job that has a bunch of small fasteners.

Hey Guys,

Is there a general consensus on which torque wrenchs are recommended without spending snap on / Mac type of money?

I have a cheap beam style and really cheap HF that I use for large torque values like tires or suspension but I’m in need of small FT lbs and Inch lbs for thing like transmission filter bolt torque or transmission pan bolt torque

I have bought used recalibrated snapon torque wrenches(and other tools) on ebay before with good results for relatively cheap.

You won't catch me using cheap junk for measuring

Lowes has some craftsman torque wrenches on decent sale now, paid $65 for a 50-250 and I think the 20-150 is like $50 or something. I've used my craftsmans for about a decade now, no issues.

You're overthinking/over worrying about this. I wouldn't recommend the HFT line of torque wrenches if I had ever had any issues with their accuracy in the past 20+ years I've been using them.

If your torque wrenchs are 20 years old, that would make them the Pittsburg line. I have equally had great luck with them. HF now has Quinn and Icon torque wrenchs.

Do you ever see a snap on truck driving around? The ones around here have a checker for torque wrenches

I've only dealt with the Snap-On truck once and had no problems exchanging one of my half a dozen Snap-On tools that I either found or bought used but if I brought in a different brand torque wrench to get checked for some reason I would expect to get told to "Get that thing out of my truck!" before getting it checked or "That's so far off it can't be calibrated, buy our latest Snap-On torque wrench." after it's checked. Maybe I'm wrong for expecting too little but the biggest spenders usually get the best results just about anywhere.

I have always had a relationship with the tool truck guys so my experience may differ.
