Warn Winch: Zeon VS VR series

The premium Zeon series is manufactured in Oregon with a few foreign parts, the entry level VR series is imported from China and made with 100% Chinese parts.

I’m assuming the Zeon series is their only 10,000lb winch that’s USA made?

I’m also assuming your opinion of the quality of the VR series is pretty low :)

The vr series is going to be better than your avarage horable freight China winch for sure, but probably not as good as an M or zeon. The zeon I suspect without checking specs will probably have a faster line speed. Unloaded line speed is quite important for off road recovery.

I run their 9.5xp which is USA made which is close enough to 10,000 for me. Either is overkill for a TJ but...

Warn's VR series is no doubt at the top of Chinese quality. I wouldn't say its quality is low by any measure but even if it was comparable in quality to their winches made in Oregon (which I don't believe it is) and less costly, I'd still buy an Oregon made winch. I'd rather my $$$ go to helping Americans stay employed than the Chinese.

I agree 100%, Canadians felt that way too.... until last month.....

From another popular forum:

The WARN VR Series winches are not rebadged Tabors, they're not just rebadged M-series winches, and they're not being bought from a Chinese factory and having WARN logos slapped on 'em.

The WARN VR winches have different motors, geartrains, remotes, and finishes vs. the M-series, and the Tabor winches have been discontinued in North America (and, the VR are still not just old Tabors with new names). The VR Series are backed by the same limited lifetime warranty that we have on all of our other 12V truck winches, and we test them just like all of our other winches. These are currently on our assembly lines in Oregon.

Yes, some of the parts come from global suppliers, but other parts are also are made in our Oregon plants. In addition, they're all designed, engineered, tested, and built in Clackamas, OR.

I hope this clears up some confusion.

The best bumper ornament is always going to be a 30 year old rebuilt 8274 though ;)

The truth is...and nobody on here will admit it...75% of the members on this forum rarely use that thing that looks pretty sitting on the bumper. I’ve used mine 3x since I’ve had it and it has performed excellent.

True, mine has gotten used 2x for recovery and 1x for demonstration in 2 weekends of wheeling this season. (and one of those was guiding a newbie run)

It earns its keep.

Having a winch is a responsibility of all wheelers. Being a smart wheeler is too. Hopefully you don’t have to use it. But if you do, it’s ther, and you or others are not stranded, assuming it is reliable and you know how to use a winch.

One key to a happy winch is to keep it moving. Every month or two, spool out 10ft of line and run it back in. It'll help keep the brushes free in the motor and make sure the grease stays distributed evenly. Also if it gets under water with any regularity plan to tear it down every few years for a good clean up.
