Get ready for brake-by-wire

On a newer vw you need to hook it up to a dealer computer to retract the caliper pistons, in order to replace pads. If you try and use a clamp apparently it's bad news.

There must have been a time
when we could have said no.

Not exactly... It's an electronic parking brake. It's just like winding the Pistons in on a mid 90s gm car, except it's an electric motor. No sensors, just a simple, two wire connection. So, apply 12 volts to the proper terminals, and that puppy winds itself in lickidy split. It's a DC motor, so if you hook it up backwards first, no harm is done.

Nice I thought it was also related to the abs system getting pissed off.

back in 65 I think it was that we had to do away with the old road draft tube and install the pvc valve, retard the timing for smog it was written up to make us beleave that after 20/25 yrs one year would drop off to be smog exempt well here it is 2018 and the last time any gas vehicle was 1975 don't know about any other states but in California ya cant believe what they put in black & white in mho its all about money

In Arizona you get smogged on any car 1967 and newer. So if you buy a 66 CJ 5 you are golden, but if you buy a 67 then you have to take it in every other year, and let some jerk kid bounce it on the dyno for 10 minutes. It's pretty lame, so you can imagine in Arizona cars older than 66 are a mint!

Back in the '80s, Washington state (well, the northern counties, anyway) had it where '67 and up had to go through emissions testing. Every year, the year for required testing moved up a year. Then when it got up to a 1974 model year being the first year requiring testing, they suddenly went back to '67, and held it there. So again, all '67 and up vehicles had to be tested. Grrrr…

When Gary Locke was running for governor, one of his campaign promises was he would bump the first year of requirement up, and have it progress forward again each year, like it was originally. It was the only time I've ever voted Democrat. He was elected, and made good on his promise. Good man.

*Oh, and his wife, Mona Lee, was hot!!! Used to be a local television reporter. So maybe that's the real reason I voted for him! I'll never tell... ;)

Technology marches forward, I can say that the more computer controlled systems that monitor an engine, the less likely it is for that engine to have a critical failure. And brake by wire is sure to have a mechanical failsafe, since they need to stop if all else fails.

The JK ('07) had electronic ETC (Electronic Throttle Control), and TJs still had the throttle cable, so to answer your question, the 2006 TJ was the last one before the Drive by Wire.
Have I ever mentioned how much I HATE crappy drive by wire systems? It's not too bad on the wife's mini but on my JK there was a good 1/4+ second delay between my foot and the motor until I ran a pedal calibration with an aev procal. It made me look like I'd never driven stick before. Not to mention the least little knock from missing the sync between gas and clutch and the ecu would get stuck retarding the timing so bad the motor couldn't recover. I once saved it and it just kept idling like I was on the verge of stalling... Until I touched the gas and it died... I can't stand that crap.
