The dreaded 06 PCM problem

So the other day a problem returned that I hoped never would. The PCM problem in 05 and 06 automatics. I was wondering if anyone has taken they're Jeep to a dealer and they flashed it.
 
Just took mine to NAPA to have Rebuild and Return.. Will let you know how that works.
I did not realize NAPA did that. How much did it run you if you dont mid me asking? no matter what happens the PCM will have to be rebuilt or replaced so just trying to find the best deal with a good warranty.

Knew the manager at NAPA so he charged 300 to send off, and 50 to flash, and 14$ to ship. He said the turn around would be a week or two. so 375. I couldnt find any of the "Reman" or the "Mopar". But i didnt want to pay the $1000 for the mopar pcm.

So I went to my local dealer yesterday to talk to them and they informed me that they dont even offer re-manufacturing PCMs nor do they sell them and if I got it re-manufactured by another company and they erased my vin and other information off of the PCM that they could not reprogram it. I thought this was very odd because people always talk about going to their dealer about getting the PCM re-manufactured. Does a place like NAPA or other online sources erase the vin and other info on my specific Jeep if i send my PCM to be re-manufactured?
 
Try calling a different dealers. Sometimes you end up talking to someone who has no clue. I looked at the dealer I purchased mine from and they still list it as available. Its list price is $1241, though. If you have the grey sentry key you will definitely need it to be programmed. The part number you are looking for is R6044703AD.
I'm wonder if Napa is just sending it out to be cleaned and re-soldered avoiding the need for programming. If they are just taking cores and sending out repaired units it could cause issues. I would be cautious of surrendering my original unit unless I knew.

I was looking at a company that is based here in NC that supposedly repairs PCMs and I was going to call them and make sure that 1 it has a lifetime warraty on it and 2 if I need it to be reprogrammed after they "repair" it.

After reading through a lot of the forums, some posts going back 8+ years, it seems that a lot of people are just dealing with the hard shift? Some seem to reset frequently, but others are just dealing with it, is that right?

On another note, I called the local dealer last week and they said there was a pretty big backlog for pcm’s, not sure if that means that everyone is going to be sol or if it is just going to take time for fulfillment. Is anyone else having better luck?

First of all welcome to the forum! And yes many people with 05 and 06 Wranglers have this problem. There seems to be various different things that you can do to make the problem go away temporarily but it always comes back. The only permanent fix that anyone has seemed to find is to replace the PCM which is a gamble in itself because many people have had 3 or 4 PCMs trying to fix the issue with no avail. This is such a problem in 05 and 06 Wranglers that there is virtually no way to get a brand new PCM from Mopar. The only thing that they can provide is a remanufactured PCM.

I did it because I come from the "points, plugs, distributor cap, condenser, rotor era. I discovered that the distributor in my Dodge Dakota's Magnum engine had nothing whatsoever to do with the ignition timing.
And because of my friend and mechanic, Dex of Dex's Automotive let me look over his shoulder I rapidly learned the wonder and beauty of automotive computers and value of an honest mechanic with very expensive up to date diagnostic equipment.
I read that many Corvette aficionados change shock absorbers at 10,000 miles; the Bilstein TRD shocks in my Tundra are fine at 260,000.
Many replace oxygen sensors and fuel injectors. Mine last hundreds of thousands of miles. They change oil at 3,000 to 5,000 miles, I change mine at the rated life of 25,000.
So accept this whole thing as possibly having something you didn't know, that will help you get the most durability and service from your vehicles.

Makes you wonder what it is about the 05-06 PCMs that caused this widespread issue.

Oh yea I do not mind replacing things that go bad that’s just part of being a car enthusiast. The problem I have with the pcm issue is the fact that it is so widespread yet many people have such a problem actually getting the issue fixed. If it was as simple as just buy a new pcm I would have done it but sadly isn’t the case.

Yeah, my understanding was that prior to 05, they were separate units.

If my 05 engine went bad, I might consider swapping in an 03-04 engine / wiring harness.
To be honest for the time being, I am just living with the problem. My dealership wont even mess with it and There is a company somewhat local that repairs PCMS and I might try them but only one thing holding me back. The dreaded M word MONEY

Yeah, I hear ya. I would probably live with it for as long as I could too.

For now, every few weeks or so when it starts messing up, I reset the PCM and it fixes it usually its a few months but sometimes it could be a few days. It is very strange to say the least

That is really odd to say the least. I've had two 2005 Rubicons and it hasn't happened on either of them (knock on wood)!

Well Guys, i just got mine in from NAPA, it looks great externally, may have swapped the case and left my guts inside, IDK... But i do know that im still getting ERROR CODES: P0700, and P1604. Im to the point now where im about to check every individual pin and search for a pinout diagram.... This is agrivating.....
