OFFICIAL: 2019 JL turbo diesel

Diesels are cool, but those anemic diesels they put in the Jeeps are nothing compared to a Cummins power plant or similar :D

Still, if I was going to buy a JL, that would be the engine I would get it with, only because I have no desire for a Pentastar minivan engine.

The 3.8 minivan engine was and is a POS...the 3.6 in the JK and JL is more than capable. It’s actually very peppy

The real question is if they will put it in the 2 door variant. Right now the way I read it is for unlimited models. Also I think it will have a manual option for those that love to shift

Yes, but it's still a minivan engine (used in the Chrysler minivans), haha. People forget about that.

I know, I've driven one, it's got a decent amount of power. Still, given the choice between ANY diesel and a Pentastar, I'd take a diesel any day.

They don't care about the 2-doors anymore. I'd love to see the sales numbers on them versus the 4-doors.

Yea I had a jk and the engine was fine to me. I doubt anybody would chose a v6 over a diesel lol

And let’s be honest...this thing is prolly gonna come in at 58k stripped down as a Rubicon. Would be nice, but damn that’s gonns cost some coin.

Nobody in their right mind would. Even though it's not a Cummins or anything, the diesel still would have the better fuel economy, more tuning options, and the bio diesel option if you really wanted to get crazy.

I drove a 2017 JK. I thought it would have more power and I thought it would ride smoother with the LWB. Maybe the guy was running too much psi, but I was not impressed. It’s like several vehicles, the engines barely produce enough power and are often underpowered.

Even though I would love to see one, I highly doubt they will add a manual to the diesel model. They will probably pair it with the same 8 speed used in the grand Cherokee and only be available in the highest trim packages for at least the first year or so. That said it will be awesome to see a wrangler with a highway mpg in the high 20s. Maybe with all the mods forum members would throw on it we could see high teens :p

My bet is these things with the minimum required options to order will cost dam near 60k if not more.

Yeah the cost is for sure going to be insane, I was thinking about a JL Diesel once upon a time but just not worth it.

Well maybe not new.... I can see picking one up way down the line when they get affordable. Or I win the lottery :p

Prices on em probably won't drop fast. Have you seen the cost of a good 3.6 JK lately? You can almost buy new for the price of a 3 or 4 year old one.

There must have been a time
when we could have said no.

Modern restricted diesels is still better than any current option for the Wrangler. Yes better than our 4.0

I've been thinking about the JL Diesel option forever.

This is not a Geo prizm forum looking at Ford F250s. We are wrangler enthusiasts and this is exciting. If I had the cash to get it as a 4th vehicle I would get one.

Sure the TJ and LJ are awesome but come on. We talk a little bit of crap because they are expensive compared to what our platform can do. But who wouldn't like a brand new vehicle with modern amenities that has similar capabilities or higher due to 3rd party support.

It's like saying my 92 Civic gets 38mpg why would I buy a new Civic for $20k. New ones have all these sensors, electronic problems yada yada yada

Agreed. 100%

Excited for the first time about the post TJ era Wranglers. I'm curious to see how the diesels fare. I hope they don't restrict the diesels to only the 4 doors. But if they do that crap, I'm hoping some one figures out how to swap into a 2 door someday. A good and proper diesel in a 2door Wrangler will be amazing, even it's a JL with a lot of electronics.

I will be shocked if the 2 door gets it right away if ever. But, I bet you someone will have a 2 door diesel at sema the same year as release.

Does anyone know if they offer the 2 door wranglers with a diesel in Europe or is it only 4 doors?

The build tool at Jeep.com let me build a 2d JL Rubi. It does force you to the 8 Speed auto. All that for the bargain price of $45k plus tax.

You can get a 2 door JLR with a manual for $39440. Add another 2k for auto. Then of course add all the "fun" stuff and the bargain price really jumps. But, in a few years, I'll be getting a new JL

I'm not super excited for the Diesel option in a wrangler. I've been driving Chevy Colorados around a bit and they have a diesel option. Its definitely a fuel economy move vs power (at least in the Colorado). The gasser (3.6L) 0-60 time is like 7.5 seconds. The Diesel is closer to ten! Now, I haven't driven a diesel enough to know about highway passing power (I assume it would be fine) but it really doesn't have that pull like you would expect from a high torque engine.

I expect FCA is pulling the same trick, to boost their CAFE statistics.
