I'm surprised an article like this didn't already exist on the site, especially given the number of people who ask how to identify which axles they have on their Jeep Wrangler TJ.

The goal here is to give future TJ owners and new TJ owners a guide on how to identify which axles they have under their TJ.

What's the Difference Between the Jeep Wrangler TJ Dana Axles?
Aside from the differential covers, the biggest difference between the axles is the size. The number in the name (Dana 30, Dana 44, etc.) is in reference to the sizes of the axle.

Dana 30: This axle the front axle most commonly used on all non-Rubicon model TJs. There was no other front axle option available for the TJs other than the Dana 30, unless you got the Rubicon model, which has the Dana 44 front axle. The Dana 30 came with either 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10 or 4.56 gears.

Dana 35: This was the rear axle most commonly used on the TJ non-Rubicon models. The Dana 35 came with either 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10 or 4.56 gears (the 4.56 gears only came in the late model TJ SE's with automagic transmissions).

Dana 44: This axle was used both front and rear on all Rubicon model TJs (03-06), and was also used as an optional rear axle for 97-06 non-Rubicon model TJs. Finding a non-Rubicon model TJ with a Dana 44 rear axle is not very common, and certainly commands a higher resale value. All Rubicon Dana 44s had 4.10 gears, while non-Rubicon model Dana 44 rear axles had 3.55 (97 only) and 3.73 gears.

Did this section come from a JK site? In the Dana 35 section, it says something about being used in 2007, and the lockers are pneumatic, not electric like is mentioned in the last sentence.

Good call, I forgot to re-write that section, which I just did!

OK, I’m a newb. I feel ashamed. I’m a retired teacher that was on the top of the food chain in my profession. I’m a Dad that based on all accounts was a good Dad. I’m a husband that’s been married for 33 years to the same woman (how she’s put up with me is a testament to her, not me) and yet I’m apparently Axel illiterate)
So, even thou I’ve studied Chris’ pics, read the specs;I’m still uncertain. What rear axel do I have on my ‘03 TJ? Thank you, y’all are better than I!

Yes, that is a Dana 44. The Dana 44 is stronger than the Dana 35. In addition to that, you'll find much more aftermarket parts and support for the Dana 44 axles as oppose to the Dana 35. With a built Dana 44 you can very safely run up to 35" tires.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I too am new and just want to make sure I know what I have. To me the front is a 30 and the rear is the 44? Pictures are in that order.

Thank you for all your help!

Yep, that's a Dana 30 front and a Dana 44 rear.

Thank you for the great write-up! I just purchased my first Jeep; 2006 Wrangler X. They look like the Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear. Can you help a noob out and confirm?

Yes, that's a Dana 30 in the front and a Dana 35 in the rear.

Just a note on the Dana 30 / 35 combo with the 4.56 axle ratio. The 4.56 gears only came in the late model TJ SE's with automagic transmissions. Those axles are probably rarer than Dana 44's. FWIW

Wouldn't it be nice to have 4.56 gears from the factory?

Dana 35/194MM and Dana 30/186MM on my '99 Sport Automatic TJ.
Using my VIN, I discovered: 3.07 rear axle ratio
Very informative threads, Chris. Thanks for creating and sharing the knowledge.
