I’m trying to take out the front shocks but the bolt on the top is just spinning and I can’t figure out how to get it off. Any ideas?

Supposedly you can break the top post off by pulling the bottom end towards you.

Penetrating oil of your choice. Vise grips on the square tip. Turn nut with a ratchet wrench.

Yes, they were past there prime. When I got them out and compressed them against the floor, they never popped back up.

you need 1/4" wrench on the top square part of the threaded bolt and a wrench on the nut below to loosen it. Sorry If I misread you post but this how I interpreted it.;)

You can actually use a good crescent wrench on top which you can tighten down and have more leverage.

In my case both shocks the top 1/4" flats twisted off in the crescent wrench by turning frozen nut. I used a cut off wheel after that.

edit to ad: Every time the jeep was up on the hoist starting in April nuts and bolts were presoaked with Kroil. I installed shocks in October. The nut wasn't coming off.

Use never seize when you install.

I just used a big pair of channel locks on the shock body to hold it. On one side I used a socket from above and broke it off. The other side came off fine. Trashed the shocks obviously.

I just dealt with this and used a pipe wrench on the top part of the shock tower. It locked in and kept it from spinning for me while the impact did the work. That 1/4 flat area on the threads is a joke on 20 year old shocks! lol

What kind of saw you use to cut off the rod? Sawzall or Dremel style. Trying to figure out the best one to attack the threads

I'd use a sawzall, I don't think my Dremel could fit in there much less cut that material very well.

Gotcha, I saw a guy who said he used bolt cutters. Got me thinking that may be a cheap way to go🤔, as Id have to buy a sawzall

Pretty sure I used a cut off wheel in a grinder. The shock rod is plated / hardened.
