Ok, this will sound weird BUT, I am very close to retiring from the military. I currently live in Ohio. I am looking to move, North Carolina is an option. The wife wants somewhere that's warmer and doesn't get cold (under 30) any more. So I guess I am asking what is the best spot, I need decent schools and such. I have a potential in Beaufort NC. Just looking to see what everyone has to say. Stay in ohio or move to NC....

might be helpful to give us more of a demographic of you...are you fully retiring? still going to work private sector full time? any kids school age? rural/city living? on the coast or not near it? sooo many variables

yes my mistake. Fully retiring( will work if needed for a break), kids in school ages 6, 10, 14, rural living on the coast, looking at a place up at Fisher Point

I strongly favor the notion of the Beaufort NC option.

I happen to be a veteran surfer (25+ years in the water - on both Left and Right coasts--to include surfing the Outer Banks, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach (NC), and Folly Beach (SC). And so, my position is somewhat biased.

However, in the much larger scheme of things; I believe we're transitioning into a mini ice age--wholly contrary to what the Globalists have convinced the mindless-masses of, with respect to "Climate Change" - to include tens of millions of $$$ in pay-out's to "scientists" who propagate their cause. My case it point: the Winter's over the past 5 years have become increasingly colder (say, how's the weather today, in Ohio?).

:)

Beaufort wins that one.

With the above in view, you can expect the Winter in 2019/2020 to be even colder than this one--a steady pattern I've observed, again, for over 5 years now.

In Beaufort and the surrounding area/region, you are of course subject to hurricanes. Not a problem, just keep your "bug-out-bags" at-the-ready, keep your insurance current, and plan to catch "Clean-Up Day" - the day after a hurricane marches through--when the waves are still pumping (BIG)--and are much cleaner in shape and form:). I'd keep a 7'-10" Hybrid and an '8-7" Mini-Longboard handy.

Then, there's the economic part of this equation: I believe we're laterally sliding-into a figurative "ice age" with respect to the economy--combined with social and civil unrest--a collision or collective crescendo within the next 24 months, which will equate to the most tumultuous season nationally, in your lifetime. With this element in view, one must consider the element of physical safety and security. In this regard, the Beaufort area wins, in my book, hands-down.

Then again, there's guys like me, surfer or not, who go where they're "called" to go — to places which wholly defy the above reasoning :)

P.S. Just between you and me and the fence post; "Global Warming" is about Global Governance - a picture is worth a thousand words (below):

Beaufort looks like a nice yearly climate. I’m in Cameron, NC. I left Texas at 21 for the Army and have been here ever since. Honestly, I am trying to find every reason to stay here in NC the rest of life because the weather is so much better than south Texas. And like the saying goes... happy wife happy life

I live in Winterville which has an excellent school district. I moved my family there for the kids to go to school. We frequent the coast and Beaufort, Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle etc are only an hr and a half or so away.

Hampstead is growing but things are still cheap. Pender County schools are really great and less than 10 minutes to topsail and surf city

So, update, I have just went into contract on a house in Sneads Ferry, NC. Now the trick is finding a local club to join.. Will only be 40 days until I pack up the Jeep(on a trailer) behind a 26 moving truck and head to NC. Looking forward to the new adventure.....

Nice...I just looked it up, everything I want is north of a million bucks, so much for downsizing when I retire..lol But really, enjoy, it looks like a great place to be.

I don’t have any info on clubs, but we drive near that area on our way to Ocracoke Island. From Cedar Island it’s about a 2 hour ferry ride to the island. All of Ocracoke and a lot of the area from Cape Hatteras to almost Nags Head is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. With a permit (10 day or annual are available) you can drive on the beaches. Many miles of beach driving too. Some places have remains of old shipwrecks, which is pretty cool to come up on.

South of you is Cape Lookout. Very remote, but you can also take a ferry there and check out the beaches and lighthouse and camp on the beach. We haven’t done that one yet but it’s on our list of things to do.
