Has anyone painted their TJ hardtop? Thoughts? Success? I currently have a 2006 TJ Wrangler, midnight blue with gray hardtop. Thinking about painting the top midnight blue also. TIA.

I've seen it done before but I don't particularly like the look myself. If you end up doing it, be sure to share some photos.
I did however repaint my factory hard top to black. I had a grey factory hard top, but I wanted it to be black, so I prepped it and painted it myself with SEM trim black spray paint. It's held up for years now with no issue, and it looks as good as factory, you'd never know!

I plan to paint mine in the spring. I'm also going from gray but I'm going to black to match the uppers on my half doors. I've looked into it a bit and aerosol bedliner paint seems to be one way to go. It's not too thick. I used Duplicolor bedliner paint on my hard uppers and it turned out well so that's probably what I'll use. It'll be easy to touch up if I have to.

I spent about 1-2 hours sanding every nook and cranny with 1500 grit wet sand paper. I removed the tailgate glass and all the hardware in order to do this, as well as any seals that I could.
After that I washed the entire thing down thoroughly with dawn soap and water. After it was completely dry I went over it with a coat of acetone just to make sure the surface was 100% clean.
After that I did 4 coats of SEM trim black spray paint.
That did the trick. It's held up nicely for almost 2 years and it looks like it's a brand new factory top!
All-in-all, I'd say I probably spent about 5-6 hours on it over the period of about 2-3 days (I was taking my time).
I just posted on some thread about this, I too am not a huge fan of the look on a tj because I had the same idea until I saw someone who actually did it with my same body color (solar yellow). I just googled it and I did not like 90% of them except this bad boy I found.
I like this look actually, maybe it depends on the body color but yellow hardtop on a yellow jeep looks god awful. Best of luck!!!
That's the only time I've seen it where it actually looks good!
Probably because it's red. Yellow would look ugly as sin.

The red does look ok, but not as good as the black IMO. Body color painted hard tops just make Jeeps look too much like SUV wannabes to me. Just look at all the color-matched hard top JKs running around these days. Yuck. Makes them look like a Bronco II.
I painted mine black. But doesn't match the body. I first, washed it. Then did a little sanding. Primed it with self etching primer. And spray painted it with truck bedliner. I did the same with my mirrors, bumpers, and fender flares. It's been over a year and has held up great!

An 'off colour' yellow for the top might look a lot better. The yellow is a harsh colour ...... the 'Chiquita Banana' theme ....

I need Jeepers opinions. When I bought the TJ Sahara came with White Hardtop I’m assuming it factory. Mine got destroyed. Found a Nice replacement in Black. Which looks better???

I may be biased though as mine is white with a white hardtop.
I don't think the black looks bad though.
The gables changed on your house . Jeep looks awesome either way .
