TPS: about to give up

This is a summary of my TPS problems. I'm about to give up because I can't figure it out.

started with the p0123 error code with an additional p0121 sometimes at random.

I put on a new aftermarket TPS. That did not solve the problem. I went back and tested my factory original with my multimeter and it appears to test out fine.

I tested continuity on all three wires of the TPS plug all the way back to the computer plug and all three have continuity.

I have good 5.12 volts to the power supply on the TPS plug. with my multimeter connected to the TPS I seem to have good smooth range of motion and voltage on the factory original GPS. I have since taken the cheaper aftermarket TPS back to the store.

I suspected that a clock spring problem so I took that out and continuity tested all the wires and all appeared good. I have since reinstalled it and unplug the clock Springs to drive around testing it like that. I also have cruise control on the clock spring.

there could actually be a clockspring problem because once in awhile my airbag light would come on and off at random multiple times while driving in the same trip..
originally I thought it was the new light bulb that I soldered into the passenger airbag switch on the floor because I know when those burn out they can cause an air bag light to come on but since I soldered in a new bulb it works fine even though it's an LED and and I believe it did fix that problem.

i then suspected a ground problem to the engine or to the TPS. So I added two more grounds coming from the firewall to the engine block and a ground from the negative battery to the fuel rail.

I then spliced in and soldered two additional ground wires going to the TPS ground wire, one near the TPS the other near the computer plug and connected directly to the negative side of the battery, the other to the firewall ground bolt.

I have not ordered the factory original TPS because it's $70 and I don't think it is the problem. But I have tried everything else I can find and researched am I about to give up.

anything else that I can try before bringing it to the mechanic or should I just break down and buy the factory original $70 TPS to try?

when I clear the code I can drive around for 20 miles perfectly or so before the code pops up and the engine starts bucking so bad it's barely drivable. Then the same code comes back. the check engine light and engine bucking started twice when leaving a stop sign and making a left hand turn yesterday it was going straight down the road at 55 miles an hour steady. the other dozens of times were just at random that I don't remember. once the check engine light comes on it never goes off unless I clear the code.

Thank you all for your input, suggestions and patience.

Did you remove clean and dielectric grease all plugins on every sensor and on the ECM it self a dirty connector will do funny things clean with contact cleaner or brakeclean

Have you done a smoke test? I was chasing intermittent codes on everything from misfires, to purge valves. Did a smoke test and discovered a leaking throttle body base gasket. Three dollars, and I haven't had a CEL in months.
I think it was KC'sTJ that turned me on to it.

Jeeps are extremely finicky when it comes to electronics. It’s highly recommended sticking with Mopar. Personally I would suck it up and buy it.

I’ve seen several TPS threads where the Mopar sensor did the trick. You could always clean it up good and return it if it doesn’t solve the problem.

No I haven't,. But I will pick some grease up and do this my first day of soon. Brake clean? I'm gonna get some contact cleaver first if I can find it. Thanks

I haven't, and never did one before. But I can try to look it up on YouTube.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I thought if I ended up quitting on it and giving it to a mechanic they would just do that anyways so I'd still be paying for it plus they would charge me more than I can get it.

I'll break down and go to the local dealer and order it. or I'll check Amazon it might be easier to return to Amazon than a dealer. Thanks for the common sense.

Try Rockauto.com for the switch if Amazon doesn't have it. Either one should be way cheaper than the dealer.

Fixed?!

I'm both pissed off and relieved at the same time.

Info for the next guy

so I ordered a new Mopar TPS from Amazon. Installed it, turned the key and started it and instantly the check engine light was off and it's running great.

I have since driven it to trip to work and back for a total of approximately 60 miles or more.

after the initial test run of 60 miles I then reconnected my clock spring and again no check engine light or airbag lights anything.

I'm super relieved because now it's running great and it appears that these $74 Mopar TPS is what needed to do the trick.

I am frustrated because I bought a brand new $40 TPS believing it was good and when I still had the problem I spent all the above effort trying to trace down a problem that didn't exist.

Lesson learned and in the future just by the factory OEM and suck it up.

Thank you all for the help and encouragement the best type of help is one that I learn from and can use in the future as well.

I thought "WTH does a GPS have to do with this issue?" The value of proofreading before hitting send.

Damn auto correct... And small screen. Fixed! Got to be sure one isn't misunderstood...
