Today I sprayed U-POL Raptor Liner on my fender flares

I hate bedliner on TJs, absolutely hate it.

However, the one place I have actually grown to like it is on the fender flares. I think they actually look good with a bit of texture to them, so I would have to say, "job well done" in this case! I think it looks nice actually.

What did you do for prep? Did you use their spray gun?

I sprayed my entire jeep. I’ve never done anything like that before. Prep is relatively easy with sandpaper scuffing metal or plastic, followed my good degreaser then an adhesive promoter. I sprayed my 2005 JL Rubicon in an hour. So far 3 months gone by, it looks great! I highly recommend it.

Let's see some tank green pics!!
Here you go!

That must be what the P.O. put on my jeep.
I've had this jeep 4 months. Got it muddy wheeling so I took it to the car wash.
As I was rinsing the mud some of the raptor liner peeled off so I stopped using the wand on my fenders immediately.
Have no idea how long its been on the jeep.

That looks pretty similar to what's going on with my flares as well. I'm hoping that maybe someone used a lesser quality coating or just didn't do the proper prep before spraying??

I did the same to my flares with the Rust-Oleum doorway bed liner last year and it still looks great.. and if u get a scratch or chip it is zero effort to hit that spot again.

I kept going and did much of the Jeep.. and really like it.

But I am going to use the same as u did for my entire plow truck this summer.

I ve seen newer and nicer entire vehicles sprayed as well and really like the look. Can't see why anyone would spray a nice paint job only to take it down trails and scratch it all up.
I did wonder how u go about tinting the u-pol stuff tho?

How do you get the paint codes and where do you go to get it tinted?IMG_20180805_150600375.jpg

You can get the paint codes from the dealer. I actually got mine from a guy who did it on Youtube. Go to a auto paint shop, give em the code, they’ll give you a can of paint ready to go. The Raptor liner gives you the mix ratio (4oz per bottle if i remember correctly), pour directly into the raptor liner bottle with the harder, shake for two minutes, attach raptor sprayer directly to the Raptor liner bottle, 60-70 psi. It really couldn't be easier. Keep the sprayer 18-22” away for good sharp peaks. If you spray too close, it’ll look like orange peel.

that's what she said........(sorry ladies on the forum, no disrespect intended)

I think you're good here... I've seen a few women in here, but most are too smart to buy impractical trucks from a couple of decades ago and dump their disposable income into modifying them to drive over large bumps.

I actually like this look a lot. I've been thinking of doing it to my fender flares for a while, only because I like the more "rugged" look it gives it. I'll be curious to see how it holds up!
It holds pretty well.. I’ve had mine done for over 5 years and it hasn’t even flaked yet.. the guy who did it said it should last about 10 yrs.. mines babied so maybe longer

Have any of you used a clear coat over your work? I used the Duplicolor system. Scuff and clean. 3 coats adhesion promoter per directions and 3 coats bed liner. Love the look so far but wanted to put a clear coat with UV protection but do not want gloss. I didn't see a matte finish on their website but didn't really want to mix manufacturers either. What have you used or suggest?

The only complaints I hear is that bed liner is hard to clean. And that if you try to wipe it down you get towel fibers everywhere. Any truth to this?

I had originally planned to use Rustoleum bed liner on my flares. But instead went with SEM trim black. I tested it on some cardboard and didn't like the finish. Plus if you commit to bedliner'd flares you kind of have to consider doing your other exterior items in bedliner too. Like the bumpers, fill cap bezel, license plate holder etc. I just wasn't to sure how well it would look and work. So I went with a traditional paint surface.

I do think this type of bedliner and other more professional ones would hold up fine. At least as well as traditional paint if not longer. From the research I did. If I had a terrible paint job I would use this stuff in a heartbeat and not hesitate to paint my offroad vehicle with it. I think it's a killer look. And can hide things better than anything else.

If anyone gets anything out of this thread, I hope it's this: prep is key!

Every time a flare thread comes up, I have to tell the story of the time I saw a guy on another forum crying up and down about his flares and how the paint sucked and it was chipping and blah, blah, blah.

Someone asked him what he did to prep. He didn't have an answer for that. Someone else pointed out a photo he'd posted in which he sprayed over a chunk of dried mud that was still on the flare. It was funny as hell.

Anyway: are textured paints much harder to clean than regular paints? I've always wondered that and I've never seen anyone actually bring it up.
