One of my Jeep goals is to go to Alaska. The Alcan 5000 rally seems like a great way to see Alaska (I'll be doing another trip up to Tuktoyaktuk before than too). Unfortunately the Alcan 2020 rally this coming winter signup is filled up and it only happens every 2 years so Summer 2022 it is!

The Alcan 5000 race concept looks cool as "the original idea of rallying as a grand tour, motoring adventure, and gentleman's sport." Basically, you have checkpoints that you have to meet, if you're early you get a penalty, if you're late you get a penalty. It's all on paved and gravel roads. Basically just one cool road trip.

Here's the map from the last summer Alcan 5000 in 2018: https://www.alcan5000.com/pdf/Alcan2018.pdf

These guys did the rally on their bikes:

I talked to the organizer and it's sounding like my red LJ won't have issues passing tech and will meet the rules. I know it's years out, but as they say "if you don't put it on the calendar it won't happen".

Does anyone else want to go and form a bit of a Jeep team?

That. Looks sick.
I would love to go. Not sure what'd I do with my kids though, or my wife for that matter 🤣

Maybe I could work it out and bring them with. Iunno. Definitely going to start a little savings for this. Maybe not 2022 for me, possibly 2024 would be a better option for me

I believe the UA guys are there this year. Actually, right now they are out wheeling.

I would be interested.
As long as I don't have to dump a bunch of money into my rig for a one time trip.

Read the rules and faq to get an idea of costs you will have. My biggest expenses will be sign up fee which includes hotels every night and some meals (can be split up among driver and co-driver if you have a friend or family member who wants to come along), gas, and VHF radio.

I only found this thread because I accidentally clicked "General Jeep Discussion" and was too lazy to click back.

This is the kind of stuff I'd love to see more of. Day trips to parks are great and all, but sometimes it's hard to justify dumping money into my beloved TJ to ride the same trails over and over.

Another reason I'd be interested in something like this: it really, really means people have to commit.

I can't tell you how many events I've created or participated in evens in which the group's Facebook page suddenly has a lot of cancellations and excuses the morning of an outing, often resulting in a cancellation of the event. It sucks.

In one frustrating instance, I put together a group outing for SMORR in Missouri. Being that SMORR is a drive from the Chicagoland area, I created a date months in advance. I was happy to see a lot of people were interested and wanted to go. A lot of RSVPs were "yes". I ended up burning three days of vacation time at work to go.

You can imagine how pissed I was when participants began dropping like flies. By the night before, everyone cancelled. It was extremely disappointing and put a huge dent in my interest of organizing future events.

Even if I don't go — though who knows what two years holds — I hope you get a turnout for this event. It looks awesome.

I have driven the Alcan 3 times in a CJ, winter is better if you are not afraid of the cold and snow. Less blue hairs in their motor homes and less rocks to take out your windshield. A block heater, oil pan heater, battery heater is a must if the temps are down to -30 and colder. Many of the stops are not open in the winter. Get a "Milepost of Alaska" https://www.themilepost.com/about-us/ amazon carries them. The farthest you could potentially drive is 250 miles between gas stops. Its a long trip, real long if you are the sole driver, plan on 8 days if you are only doing 4-600 miles per day. Whitehorse is a blast, Tok has a great fresh salad at fast eddies, Watson Lake is small but has all of the amenities...

To add to this, I can't tell you how many times I've heard about people's plans and desired trips and what their Jeep could do. I know of very few who have actually done those things or are actively working towards those goals. I get it that things happen in life outside of our control, current financial/time/skill/physical/whatever limitations happen, but using those as an excuse for not doing something to me means that you have other priorities. Anyone can have goals or say they're going to do something, few work towards it.

I'm pretty darn serious about the Alcan 5000 in 2022 so if it works out for you too I'd love to have you along!

The Alcan 5000, or just the trip? Mrs Tox and I are making plans for Alaska or Tuk in summer/fall 2020. (if anyone wants to join up for all or part, hit me up)

winter is better if you are not afraid of the cold and snow. Less blue hairs in their motor homes and less rocks to take out your windshield.

This is a very good point that I didn't consider. I've heard that a lot of gas stations close down once the snow starts flying. Does the milepost list what's open when?

A block heater, oil pan heater, battery heater is a must if the temps are down to -30 and colder.

Are hotels needed in order to find a spot to plug in or does slipping a few bucks for an outlet for the night speak wonders?

The farthest you could potentially drive is 250 miles between gas stops.

The khaki TJ gets 14mpg so 260 miles to a tank the red TJ I'm expecting to get around 200 mile range. So either way I'm thinking I need to figure out a gas storage solution.

I love this plan. That’s all for now, I’ll look into it, see whether I’m motivated to reach this goal

I have watched this thread and checked email notifications. I have a friend that has competed in a stage "race" like this. He loves them enough to do it several times.

Not interested in the race despite it looking awesome but sure got my wheels turning about taking a roadie from Texas to Alaska. So many things to see along the way and would be a hell of a trip.

Just curious, would you guys drive or haul your Jeep up there since you're racing them?

A guy that I worked with years ago drove the Al-Can hwy after his senior year with his buddy [1970?]. They started their trip in NC. The buddy had a pickup and my coworker bought a camper shell. They stocked up on canned fruit, dinty moore and extra tires. By the time they got to Alaska they were out of fruit, had 1 extra tire, hated beef stew and were about out of money. I don’t remember what city they were in but they went to the college there and students there let them get cleaned up. They used the schools summer job bulletin board and found a job on a hog farm. They worked the summer, saved money and got back home. He told some good stories about his summer adventure.
