After seeing the Dog breeds thread I thought I’d start this thread for cat breeds. I’m thinking of getting a new cat because I obviously want to be a crazy cat lady. I already have two cats I adopted from the humane society, so I feel like I’ve contributed to the adopt don’t shop thing.

Now I want a more specific breed of cat, but I don’t know what breed I want. Multiple people have recommended a Maine Coon, but they can grow to close to 40 lbs! Any recommendations?

Cats seem to have a lot less focus on breeds than dogs and I don't think the breed particularly matters much unless there's a specific look you want, such as a Siamese or hairless, etc.

Personally, I think Maine Coons look awesome, but that is because they are such big monsters, haha.

However, from my experience, your best bet is often to just go for a cat that you like the looks and personality of. Choosing looks is easy, but personality (as with dogs) can be a bit of a roll of the dice since a lot of a cat's personality will only come out once you've owned it for a while.

One thing you may want to check out is how comfortable the cat is being picked up and held. Some cats will completely razor-flail if you try to pick them up. Other cats are so laid back that you can pick them up, hang them upside down, whatever, without any issue.

...come to think of it, I had heard of a breed of cat called "ragdoll". I've never owned one, but from what I understand, they should be very docile and are much like the latter I described when you pick them up.

I love the teddy bear looks of a British shorthair.

I have two Maine Coons, well, one is only part. They're about 25 pounds and three feet long. :)

I've owned two Abyssinians and a Bengal. I'd really like to own a Maine Coon next.

maine coons have a really dog-like personality. they're social and goofy and usually always ready to play.

Bengal cats are pretty cool looking cats. You'd be putting down some cash though.

We have a calico that tolerates us living with it. We rescued her as a kitten from a couple of drunks who I really don't think were aware they had it. She'll come to you when she wants attention, which is usually 3am and she becomes a lap cat, or if she is cold. She is my wife's world.
