Jeep dogs

I often watch a 40lb pit bull mix when her owner is out of town. A complete sweetheart but she is a rescue so we dont know her history and she HATES being picked up. In fact I have never been able to do it but my son has. My TJ has 2 1/2 inches of lift with 33's and I can never get her in because its too high for her to jump in and I cant pick her up.

We had a pit mix that was a shelter dog. She was extremely sweet. The only issue I have with shelter dogs, is that you don't know their story, which is ok, but you just gotta remember what they are and some aren't gentle and some aren't obedient, etc. If they're older, I feel like you can learn their personality faster, so it might be better to get an older dog than a pup, but in any case remember what they are so respect them and don't put them in situations where they can hurt kids, others, you or themselves, because if they do they're generally getting put down, not to mention what most dogs are capable of doing.

I prefer hunting dogs and they like being a little bit rougher and they snap a bit, almost only when they're surprised. When they're territorial they're obvious. If you act weird around them they act weird back. Though this is common to me, I know my nieces don't understand and think they're teddy bears, which normally they are, so I have to inform my nieces and keep the dogs out of situations that can be bad.

My GSP though territorial and likes to play rough and would gnaw a tree down to get to game, might be a lap dog. I think she's terrible in vehicles, because she can't be on my hip or in my lap. If I didn't drive manuals and if I had bench seats, I'd probably let her sit beside me when we travel, but this is just a theory and I don't want to take a risk like that when driving. When we go to bed she would throw a fit if she couldn't be under the covers on my side. Normally I wouldn't prefer a hunting dog to be an inside dog, but we had just moved, didn't have the right setup outside and she was good inside. I did talk with the wife and the dogs will be mostly outside going forward, but Lily will stay on my side for the rest of her life.

This is an older pic and my old dog can't jump in the Jeep like he used to. Not a whole lot of room for him but a heck of a lot more than in the TT Roadster I got rid of.

I'm inclined to agree that.... ;)

whatever you do, PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE ADOPT...DON'T SHOP.

There are plenty of great dogs just waiting for a good home. Personally I have a female Pit and male American Bulldog. Both adult rescues and love to ride in whatever I'm driving.

We shopped ours, but I feel I rescued it from the breeder is he came from. Too many pups around and didn’t get enough attention.

My current pup was rescued by a friend of mine... He was found behind a dumpster at the college I had recently graduated. He was absolutely tiny and obviously had been taken from his mom way too soon. My friend and I nursed him back to health using one of those baby squirrel baby bottles. Wasn’t sure he was going to make it.
He became attached to me, my friends wife joined the Army (forcing them to move), so Jax became my permanent buddy and jeep co-pilot.

This was when he began to show signs that he would pull through:

Here he is in the jeep, on the way home from a camping trip... he has his nose shoved in the vent because I had beer farts 😂. Finally got some payback on him!

We will rescue, but for hunting, I'd rather shop. I have had a low success rate and a lot of misery with rescued hunting dogs. We've had several hunting dogs and some breeds are annoying to hunt with and I'm not good enough nor want to give the necessary time to retrain some breeds. Also we have had a lot more medical issues with "free/rescued" hunting dogs, which is just something to be aware of, so I do suggest learning to look for signs of problems in a dog so you don't get something you can't afford.

Also find a good, reliable and reasonably priced vet. Our first rescue if we kept going back to that vet, they were so expensive, we wouldn't have been able to keep a dog if it had any medical issues. Most of us won't really notice our dogs being very sick until nights or weekends, so figure out emergency vets too. We learned the hard way on a pup that went to the vet at night and after less than 24hrs were into thousands for a couple of routine tests and fluids. Our next emergency, once we shopped for vets, we were in for surgery, a bunch of testing and a week long stay at the vet for about $600.

Btw if you're just getting into having dogs, if they don't stay with you restrain them. They are very hard on wildlife since they can run wildlife all day long and then go home to get fed. We have neighborhood dogs that are great and I love seeing them, but around the farm there's some dogs that will ultimately get shot by neighbors, because the dogs will run wildlife and livestock all day long and the owners will not restrain the dogs. The more unrestrained dogs, the less tolerant farmers are with our K9 family members when they do accidentally get out.

And please spay and neuter.

This is my Jeep buddy. A 2 year old Llewellin Setter that loves to go wheeling! Probably because he has it in his mind that we are wheeling to go chase birds or do some mountain biking. If I'm wrenching on the Jeep, he feels that he must be there to supervise.

I've had several dogs throughout my life, every one of them have been great, but Chucky has been the best dog I have ever had.

Here's my Jeep dog Luke, he's a rescue.

His back story: He was offered to us by a rescue organization with a gunshot wound to the face (hence the scar on his right cheek). He was about 10 months old and weighed 36 pounds. Several surgery's later, he's now 60+ pounds. Here he is at a healthy 2 1/2. We adopted him about the same time we bought our Jeep. Hence my user ID.

I've got a BMD that's gotten to big to pickup so this is what she uses to get in mine.

Here is Moab the Tuna Family Jeep Dawg. He is a German Shorthair Pointer/Lab mix, full of energy but the biggest cuddle bug as well. He has done awesome in the jeep. He usually lays or sits in the seat while we are moving but wants out as soon as we stop to play with the kids. He has a ton of nicknames but we usually call him Mo but my wife loves to call him our little bird dog. Our other dog is a rescue that we have no idea what he is but he is too protective of the kids to take him most places. Eddie is a big sweetheart except when kids are playing with his kids then he gets stupid.
