Its from Arizona so it should be rust free. I wonder if this is a case of someone not knowing what they have.

I think it is. I'm almost tempted to buy it just because... the price is so good.

the vehicle history report says its been registered in lake havasu city, AZ since it was first bought. Which coincidently my parents will start their month long stay in lake havasu on 3/1. However; my dads in the market for a 3/4 ton or 1 ton pickup at the moment. He needs a truck to pull his john deere tractor. The 2016 Tacoma he bought just doesn't have the oomph to pull it.

Shame he can't use an LJ, but it won't tow as much as a big truck.

I lived in Arizona a long time. Definitely no rust to worry about there.

Is it just me or does it look the the spare is about to fall off and take the tailgate with it lol
In these photos, it sure looks to be tilted back:

Something is definitely up with that spare, I agree!

I wonder what that's all about?

The owner said they are running 265 tires. Which means that it won't fit under the brake light. I believe that a 245 or 31" tire is the biggest size that can fit. So instead of changing the mount it looks like they just angled it back so it would clear the brake light without blocking it. Not sure what they did, but I understand the why based on the spare tire size.

It may be the tire brand, but I run 265/75-16 tires on my TJ Rubicon, and the spare clears the bumper AND the third brake light. I don't see the need to tilt the tire back...

I looked at mine this morning and I have a corsa highway terrain as my spare tire which is 245/75/16. Americas tire shows it as a 30" diameter tire. I have about a 1/4" gap between the top of the tire and the bottom of the brake light. I have a set of 265/7516 Uniroyal Laredo's that are listed as 31.6" in diameter. There is no way I can get it to fit on the spare carrier. What tires are you running? Do you think your brake light has been modified to fit the larger spare?

Mine are a 265/75-16 Futura Scrambler from Pep Boys that I got from a dealership in trade for some of the items that came on my Rubi when I purchased it. There have been no changes to the stock tire carrier or third brake light. It had the original 245/75-16 Goodyear MTR tires when I bought it, and all I did was put the new size spare on it when I got the new tires. I have put washers to move the spare out a bit so I can close the tailgate, but those did not affect the height of the spare in relation to the third brake light. I even have a little room left with the tire cover on:

Edit - I get the feeling that the Rubicon TJs have the third brake light up higher due to coming from the factory with 31" tires. I compared mine to a couple of TJ Sports in the parking lot, and their third brake light is like yours, where they barely have room for 31 x 10.50 -15 spare tires. Plus their third brake light mounts look lower in relation to the tire carrier itself, from what I can see.

My buddy at work went out and measured his X third brake light mount and the one on my Rubicon. He verified that the light is up higher on the Rubicon, most likely due to the factory 31" tire it came with, so yes that's why the 265 fit on mine, but wouldn't on a Sport or X...

Interesting. I have a sport so that explains why mine is a little lower.

Makes me wonder if a 285/75- 16 will fit on the Rubicon bracket. Translates ro a 32.8 diameter tire. I bought mine with 285s that came on it, but the spare is still the factory 245 MT/R.

The Rubicons have a pair of plastic spacers that elevate the 3rd brake light. They are about 1" to 1.25" tall. I added them to my LJ and was able to use the original 4 bolts that attach the 3rd brake light to the tire carrier.

Funny thing regarding the 3rd brake light ... if you attach an original MOPAR tailgate bike rack to your Jeep the top of it lines up with the brake light and basically renders it useless.

PVC would be great and at $41.99 for the Rugged Ridge ones you provided a link for ... you could buy a lot of it!

Absolutely. Plus, you could make the spacers any height you wanted relative to the size of your spare tire.

I'm glad this mystery has been solved, thanks!
