I need to replace my flimsy side steps with a pair of rock sliders. I definitely want rock sliders that have a side step so that they will act as mud guards to keep from throwing slop into the back seat when the top is down. Recommendations?

Can’t help you on rock sliders. But goodluck keeping mud out the interior. Only way I can see you keeping mud out the vehicle with the top down is by using very large fender flares.

This would be a good place to start. Do you intend to use the sliders or will they be mostly for looks and to serve as a step? If you are most concerned about their function as a step I would look at frame mounted. They will offer a much lower step height. However, they will decrease you off road clearance.

Thanks! I'll look at that link. I do want them for protection and I don't want to lose any clearance.

I bought the sliders from JCR for the same reasons you have. They aren’t a good step unless you’re limber. I was after the protection and no loss of clearance and these fit the bill nicely. I watched their testing video. Good enough for me.

Stay out of the slop. 😉

Savvy
JCR

In that order. I'd recommend Genright and TNT Customs, but the step is not solid and won't block as much mud slinging.

Do you expect to land on large rocks with them, like is possible with rock crawling? If not, you end up with a lot more choices, if a step is more what you need. The ones I have work perfectly as a step, minimally impacted ground clearance, would offer side protection to a degree, but are not for rock crawling.

I like my wheelwell-to-wheelwell rocker guards from AtoZ Fabrication. They have a tube, though as mentioned with the others, it's pretty high so it's not the best step.

I was impressed with the weld quality. It has I think 6 countersunk fasteners through the side of the tub as well as 4 more in the bottom. One thing I really liked about it was that it's cut out around the body mounts so I didn't have to touch those at all.

they measure 3/16's and if I had to guess are in the neighborhood of 80 pounds combined.

EDIT: Looks like AtoZ experienced the death of their owner and founder and are closed until further notice while they decide how to move forward.

Yes that was very sad news. I had spoken with Zach several times over the years, ran several of his products, and he was always just a really nice guy who produced high quality components. Zach will be missed by a lot of people. :(

Glad you took my suggestion for sliders my friend. They will serve you much better. My current sliders are from TNT Customs but I have a new set of Genright mini boat side stretch sliders in my garage waiting to go on until I paint them and the exterior of the Jeep in a month or two. I’ve had no issues with either. I only am replacing them because these will fit up with my Genright stretch corner guards and suspension seamlessly. I would just offer you my used ones but another buddy already claimed them when I bought the new set. Any set you get will serve you better than the current nerf bars. Fell free to text me with any questions

No idea what brand these are, they are tub mounted, very thick and powder coated. They they come up pretty high on the rocker panels unlike most sliders though.

I just ordered a set of the JCR's this week. I was debating between them and Savvy. Unfortunately the Savvy sliders for my LJ have been on backorder for a while. 10% off and free shipping was to good to pass up.

I've rammed my JCR's on several rocks, and while they need touch up occassionaly, they are holding up well.

You guys that recommend the JCRs. Are you talking about these?

Those are the ones I ordered. I haven't had time to finish painting and installing them yet. After unpacking, I can say they seem pretty well built and are definitely heavy enough that I expect they will take some abuse.
JCR is still running their 10% off sale so I would recommend ordering directly if you get a set. The code is "taxsale".

That looks like the right item. I got mine already coated. I just don’t have a place to paint. They are solid. Go to their site and they have video of them testing them.

Hey, since you actually have a pair, would you mind measuring them and telling me how far out from the body they are going to extend? I'm guessing maybe 3", but I'd love to know the exact measurement.

Ha! Just watched it.

3 3/4” from body to the outside edge of the “step”. I did add a rivnut to the front of each side. I couldn’t get to backside up front to install a nut, double walled. Very easy to do though. I just bought the tool since I did some rivnuts to hold down my lock box in the back when the seat is out.

It looks like once installed they will be just about 3 1/2 inches.
