“The 2006 Jeep Wrangler has a dangerously unreliable engine”

They cited Consumer Reports multiple times who don't like a single vehicle other than a 1993 Toyota Corolla. It's a pretty safe bet that whatever consumer reports does not recommend that I will love. Those people are clueless.

CR has consistently bashed Jeeps and especially Wranglers. I remember when I bought my 91YJ brand new my insurance agent gave me the page on the Wrangler from CR and told me it's not too late to return it. It was the lowest ranked vehicle that year by a decent margin. I paid $16800 for that Jeep in 91 and sold it in 2002 for $13,500 with 118,000 miles. Clutch was at about 60% and the original brakes were over 50%. Absolutely nothing went wrong in that time frame. In fact it was getting 17.5 to the gallon the day I bought it and the day I sold it. I folded that single page report up and filed it with the original sticker. I gave them both to the kid who bought it. He loved it!

CR is solely responsible for the Toyota/Honda obsessions of the last 30 years. While they are good cars they are waaaay overhyped by CR.

Here is a correction to the article:
Known issues which makes the TJ possibly dangerous or make the engine unreliable:
1. Rust damage in Frame and body all years usually major problem in rust belt areas.
2. Crack heads for 0331 due to overheating. Update to TUPY heads.
3. Death wobble can kill you fast on all years. Known issue due suspension parts failure.
4. OPDA can destroy engine if not fixed. 2004-2006.
5. Rear Main Seal oil leaking, weak point rear main seal 2 piece design.
6. Like most SUV high center of gravity prone to flips. All years and more dangerous on lifted Jeeps.
These are the only issue I can think of that validates this article.
Chime in if I missed a few.

The newer Tacomas and 4Runners are complete turds. I was driving one wondering why the hell I had to bring it to redline just to get any power out of it.

No idea what Toyota was thinking, but I wouldn't own one just based off my experience driving them.

Our family vehicle is a 19trd OR. I disagree with your statement. It certainly isn’t a v8 but it has some get up and go, even with a small lift and 32”s (mane cause I’m used to driving my TJ). Can it use more yes, but Im sure the Toyota peeps decided to only use the v6 for money/popularity reasons.(or whatever reason). No where near capable of crawling like jeeps do, and it’s HUGE but do agree with the overlandinf aspect of it. I’ve used the off road features a few times and the tech is awesome, however very complicated for the rare user. My grocery getter/family beach hauler is the best but I do wish it can tow my Jeep to the trails. Cheers! Sorry for the pic I like showing her off as much as my TJ

The site has no value whatsoever. They show complete ignorance when they compare the Kia Telluride with the Wrangler and comment that they are in the same segment. Further they have nothing to add beyond regurgitating Consumer Reports.

There are very few peers in today's automotive industry to the Wrangler in many ways. Jeep has done themselves no favors by trying to make the Wrangler into a station wagon type of SUV either. That supports the idea that the Wrangler is a SUV by the current definition (which is a station wagon people mover that has AWD) IMHO.

It is what it is... sure there have been some reliability issues but I'm not sure I can remember Jeep recalling the bulk of an entire line of vehicles for safety issues like Toyota and Honda have had to do in the last 15 years either. This is where Consumer Reports supposedly unbiased evaluations fall apart for me. Toyota recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles for some safety issues and their scored at CS didn't blink. Yet, the Jeep Wrangler has many years of reliability outside a few noted issues and it's a 1 out of 5 across the board.

What is "dangerously unreliable"? That makes me think it becomes sentient, catches fire and throws a rod 3 seconds after you've started pulling out into traffic.

I'm 56 years old.... started driving when I was 14 (gotta love agricultural states) and in that 42 year period have had a CJ or Wrangler for 32 of them. Never once have I experienced a failure that is out of the ordinary for a vehicle with one. That's in over 3/4 of a million combined miles as well on jeeps with well over 50,000 miles on them and 2 with over 150K on them.

Despite feeling singled out by this article it has completely changed my perspective on my 06 LJR! Better sell it while I'm under 150k miles!
