My toilet decided to start leaking into the crawl space this spring. I don't do waste water plumbing so I decided to hire it out. In my town there's 2 plumber options... the cheap guy who isn't great and charges by the hour. And the expensive company from a few towns over that charges by the job and guarantees their work for 30 days...

Well, I tried the cheap guy a month ago to fix my leaky toilet. He swapped in a new wax ring and called it a day. 1 hour of labor @ $100. It only slowed the leak and it was dripping again in the crawl space a week later.

So I called the expensive company who always tends to do it right and got on the waiting list... I mentioned my toilet was leaking, another guy replaced the wax ring, aand it still leaks. 3 weeks later is today. Roughly 8:30 in the morning.

They sent the new kid who looks to still be in highschool (I don't inherently have a problem with that... but it is important to the story, just wait.). He quotes me $100 service fee, $100 diagnostic fee, and $300ish repair just for the wax ring ($500 totalish). He tried to up sell me on a new toilet (not a bad idea, but I'm picky and want to choose my own toilet). It was higher than I expected but I reminded myself that I called them because the last guy didn't do a good enough job.

So it turns out that their inventory manager is bad at his job and didn't stock the kids truck with wax rings (yes, it's a plumbing service van, he's a plumber, on a job to fix a toilet). He had to wait until another truck of theirs could deliver the wax ring to him. So after he pulled the toilet and was still waiting I asked him about servicing my electric water heater while he was waiting. It'd been between 6-25 years since it had been serviced (previously my home was a seasonal cabin so it wouldn't have been turned on for more than a few weekends per year and drained every winter). He quoted it on his iPad and charged another $150 which I was happy to pay and he completed it before the other truck arrived with the parts he needed.

The wax ring arrives, the toilet still leaks, he does it again, and it leaks, and then he tried a different method, and it leaked. Turns out the flange is cracked and had actually been repaired once before (before I owned the place). So the scope of the work changed and so did the price, which I understand and tell him to write me up an updated quote. He goes on his iPad and asks me to okay another $100ish. I say fine and leave him be. I pop my head in 30 minutes later to see how it's going and new closet flange in hand he tells me that he quoted me the wrong price and he's working with his manager to update the price.... It's 1:00 by now, 6 hours on the job. By 1:30 he has the updated price: $950. Not $950 total, $950 on top of the $500 ($1450 out the door on the toilet + $150 for the water heater).

I asked to speak to the manager who gave him that price and get him on the phone. After an awkward introduction he explains to me that he needs to charge for the hour it took for the kid to drive to work, for the 6 hours he's been here, for his time, for gas/van/etc, and the additional time he'll be here.. He offered to take off $400. I told him I paid a diagnostic fee of $100 to diagnose the problem and if they didn't do a good enough job on that I shouldn't have to pay it again. And we already agreed on the price for the wax ring so if it took him longer than expected it was price by the job and not the hour. I asked him how long the new flange should take and he said 1-1/2 hours. I told him previously I've paid around $100/hour when I've had them out in the past, $950 for this job is over $600/hour and he could forget it and put the toilet back how it was before they got here and I wouldn't pay for anything (aside from the water heater service) because they didn't complete what we agreed upon. He changes his tone when he realizes that I'm serious and we settle on $850 for the toilet out the door ($1000 total for the day). This was 2:15.

Another 3 hours later, a trip to the hardware store for more wax seals, and the job is finished, I glance at the finished work, and I paid the agreed upon price. He walked out and I went to go use the toilet and it's wobbly! I tried chasing him down the driveway but he didn't see me.

How much of a jerk am I for calling the hotline and asking if they can have him turn around?

Dude it’s time to learn how to plumb. Wtf. How the hell did the last 3 guys not notice that the freaking flange was cracked. Even still I could have the old flange out and a new one in with a trip to Home Depot done in probably under 3 hours. And it would have only cost 15 dollars. Ur getting hosed

What a cluster-fuck that whole thing turned out to be. Of course, I'm sure you now know the cost/savings you would have realized if you had just bought a new toilet and installed it yourself. It's not complicated. Really surprised you didn't at least attempt it, given your level of mechanical ability.

New wax ring and it doesn't hold and something else is probably messed up. Dealing with second rate home repair folks is terrible. A plumber fixing toilet without wax ring in the truck is kinda funny, maybe only to people that have done this kinda stuff. Jerk factor in my book is equal to zero. Working on toilets sucks, once you get to the flange and below the floor it really sucks. Glad you got it fixed, you have to have a place to read forum updates undisturbed.

I started doing faucets myself a few years ago and replaced a section of copper pipe last year when I removed a dumb whole house water filter that was leaking (we have wonderful well water anyway).

You guys are totally justified in saying that I should fix it myself. I'm positive that I could manage to replace the toilet faster than the guy did today but I had a few concerns:

1) The last plumber didn't fix the leak, so I had concerns that I'd be able to.
2) It's the only toilet in the house. There's only the woods until it's working again. Fun on nice days, not so fun on cold rainy nights.
3) If I did botch the job it'd be 3 more weeks until a professional could come and get my toilet working again.
4) If the leak isn't fixed ASAP mold is going to be an issue soon and be very expensive to get rid of.
5) I couldn't use other drains (sinks/shower/etc) until it is fixed so it wouldn't flow back up. Also septic gases...

My toilet is now sitting on a solid metal flange. So hopefully the toilet cracks next time and not the flange. :ROFLMAO:

Buy new toilet, install, still leaks because the problem is the flange. That would suck.
Agreed. But would it suck $1,000 worth and the hassle he went through? The internet is your friend. Research the problem, address the likely cause. I gutted my entire house in 1996, and installed all new copper water lines, as well as all new vents and drains (not copper, of course). Total cost: $400. I did that without the advantage of the internet. I found out what code was through a plumber, took some advice, and just tackled the job. A year later, a buddy had his house re-plumbed by a professional. That was only the water supply lines, I might add. Total cost: $4,200. Not long after that, the neighbor had a 14' drain pipe replaced to the tune of $1,400.

I'm not busting @toximus' chops for not wanting to deal with it, but considering what he went through, I still think he would have been better off having attempted it himself. Just my opinion, though, so there's that.

So we purchased are new house and moved in in March. Every bathroom in the house was carpet floors. I ripped it all out. Only issue I didn’t foresee was they had this plate around the bottom
Of the toilets. I had to cut the flanges out to get the plates out. Ended up installing new flanges after I finished the floors. I only have one left to do. But ya this is where my Jeep budget and time has gone.

unfortunately they are as crooked as some mechanics and HVAC.
last 1 i called wanted 650$ + 100$ service call, to fix the glow plug on the furnace........a 35$ part that it took me 15m to install and i had to make a custom bracket.

Yep. If you can wrench your TJ, you can handle 90% of the handyman jobs in your house; especially with the internet. And it will ALWAYS cost you waaaay less. 🛠

Based on @toximus 's build threads he'd start with a wax ring at 9am and by noon he'd be running heavy equipment to excavate for a new addition to his home.

Last night I left a matter of fact review online, used my $1000 toilet (valued at $1600), and went to bed.

This morning I received a call from their receptionist/customer support team member asking if I could expand on what happened. I asked if she had specific questions or wanted the full story because it was a long one. She opted for the full story (poor thing) and 15 minutes later I concluded. She agreed that I was mistreated and said she had talked to the owner who is very upset by what happened and agreed that they bill by the job not by the hour. She asked how they could make it right and if they could offer a refund and I replied that I agreed on the negotiated price and I don't intend to go back on my word but what they can do is never rip me off again. I told her that if I or I hear a friend of mine gets ripped off I will never do business with them again. She said she wanted to talk to the owner with the update would give me a call back soon adding on that they really want to continue doing business with me in the future (and here I thought I placed myself on the black list).

She called me 15 minutes later and said that they wanted to give me 50% off ($500) and asked if that was enough. I said that I would accept it and I appreciate it. She said they really appreciate my negative review. The owner also gave me his cell phone number and email address and said to let him know if I ever feel wronged by them again.

From what I could gather, it sounds like I exposed the manager having scammed customers out of money who made commissions on each sale.

Tonight I used my modest $500 toilet.

So am I to understand that the owner and the manager are not one in the same? If that's correct, I wonder what the repercussions/consequences might be for the shifty manager?

It sounds like your story has a very satisfying conclusion. Really glad it worked out that way for you, Chief. And good on the owner for making things right. (y)

That is correct. Different people. If only we could be a fly on the wall...

It is. I was half expecting them to ask me to take the review down after offering the refund (which I am not going to do) but they did not. So respect to them there. Mrs Tox and I have been toying with the idea of a bathroom remodel some day and I would again consider asking them for a quote.

Dang what an ordeal!! Glad it had a decent outcome. Years ago my electric dryer took a crap and I wanted a gas dryer instead. I have gas in the kitchen and meter is in the back of the house. Laundry room is in the middle. Simple, splice a line and drop it into the laundry room. I call a 'reputable' plumbing company. Guy shows up looks like a 70s porn star. Cheesy mustache, 3 buttons open on his shirt and what did it was the gold bracelet (sorry gold bracelet wearers) and heavy cologne. Listened to his BS, they wanted $700. I said I have to get the dryer first and will call them. Pfffft, F that. Did it myself for less than $200. This was about 10 years ago. Since then figured if I can work with gas then I can work with anything around the house.
